The Barbara Jordan Freedom Foundation mourns the loss of our friend, supporter, and trailblazing Texan, retired Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. Rep. Johnson, like Barbara Jordan, led in her public service through fierce commitment to civil rights and equality, breaking down racial barriers and glass ceilings from Texas all the way to Capitol Hill. Her passing at the end of 2023 leaves a deep hole that cannot be replaced, but a legacy that lives on in the possibilities her work brought to life.
Learn more about her life and work in this tribute from Texas Tribune.
Johnson, the first Black woman elected to any seat in Dallas and the first Black Dallasite to serve in Congress, was a towering figure in Texas politics.
