Hello! My name is Erin Ackman. I currently teach 7th grade Language Arts at Ellis Middle School here in Austin. It's my first year as a teacher, and I'm loving it so far! My credentials include a Bachelor of Communication Arts and Literature Education with a minor in Theater Arts from MNSU Mankato and an Associate of Arts from Riverland. In the theatrical world, I have both formal training and extensive personal experiences dating back to age 5; it is a big part of my life, to say the least!
I recently made my directing debut in town as the Music Director for the high school's production of Peter Pan, and I'm thrilled to be working with Matchbox now, as well. In the future, I hope to offer more Theater classes at Ellis/AHS and expand our extracurricular programming alongside Ryan Flanders of AHS - we've got big plans!
Matchbox plays an integral part in the theatric pipeline for our students. When the opportunity to direct a Shakespearean comedy fell into my lap, I took it without hesitation. I can't wait to explore the language, wit, humor, and hijinks that Twelfth Night offers with the talented youth in this program!

Auditions are on Friday, March 6th at 6pm and Saturday, March 7th at 12pm. Hope to see you there!

💫 Matchbox Children’s Theatre is thrilled to announce that Joshua Whalen will be stepping into the role of Executive Director, beginning on Wednesday, February 11th.

🎭 For over two decades, Joshua has been deeply rooted in the Austin music and theatre community — from building stages to performing on them, and from writing songs to bringing them to life. He also brings a strong background in arts education, having taught improvisation, guitar, multimedia, songwriting, and music theory at Riverland Community College, MacPhail Center for Music, and right here at Matchbox.

✨ Joshua is excited to blend his creative experience, collaborative spirit, and love of the arts to help guide Matchbox into its next bright chapter. Our Board shares this excitement, saying: “We are confident Joshua will bring innovative leadership and a fresh spark to the next stage of our organization.”
