This is one of our favorite times of year at TIEC: announcing the newest recipients of the Texas International Education Fund.

This year, 13 TIEF awards will support projects across 10 Texas member institutions, helping faculty and staff create new international learning opportunities for students through virtual exchange, study abroad program development, and institution-wide internationalization efforts.

We’re always inspired by the ideas behind these proposals and the work it takes to turn them into meaningful student experiences. Congratulations to the 2026 TIEF awardees! We look forward to seeing these projects take shape on campuses across Texas and beyond.

What helps an entry-level candidate stand out in today’s global workforce? Increasingly, it’s the ability to work effectively across cultures.

That’s the focus of our proposed SXSW EDU session, "Cultivating Contextual Community: A Global Playbook," now live in PanelPicker community voting: https://loom.ly/5K_e9io

The session will bring together perspectives from higher education and industry to explore why intercultural competence matters to employers, how colleges and universities can build those skills into the student experience, and how institutions can make the case for investing in this work.

TIEC’s Steven Kroman will be joined by Jeff Sammons of the Texas A&M Energy Institute and Zac Hillyard of Smith Seckman Reid, with additional higher education perspectives to help connect the conversation from campus to career.

What is the Community Connect Virtual Exchange Program?

The Community Connect Virtual Exchange Program brings together students and faculty from UTSA and partner institutions in Iraq through FORSA to engage in meaningful dialogue, collaborative learning, and shared problem-solving through virtual exchange.

Through classroom-to-classroom engagement, students explore complex global issues, exchange perspectives, strengthen communication skills, and build connections that extend beyond geographic boundaries.

At the same time, faculty work together to design innovative learning experiences that encourage collaboration, critical thinking, and student engagement.

By creating opportunities for connection and learning across institutions, the program helps prepare students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

We're proud to support these exchanges and the educators and students who make them possible!
