Patriotic drag just made THE party at the polls at UH🇺🇸🎉🗳️! Shookarena visits the University of Houston PARTY AT THE POLLS! Today, Oct 20, over 60 UH students enjoyed patriotic drag, free specialty coffee, and SEAT merch to celebrate early voting.

Our tour stops are organized to meet students outside the polls with live entertainment, food, and most importantly, the energy to keep students civically engaged and return to vote in every election cycle. This tour is centering the issues bringing students to the polls including, the freedom from:

Student voices at the Texas Capitol! 📣

Last Wednesday, SEAT students testified before the Texas Senate Committee on Education, sharing their perspectives on book bans, school vouchers, and DEI policies.

From testifying to meeting with lawmakers, our students made sure their voices were heard on issues affecting public education across Texas!

What happens when students lose access to books, cultural representation, and spaces where they feel they belong?

This past week, SEAT advocates spoke before the Texas Senate Committee on Education to share the real impact of book bans and DEI restrictions on Texas public schools.

From limiting access to diverse perspectives to restricting student organizations, these policies affect more than classrooms. They affect students’ identities, experiences, and sense of belonging.

Our voices deserve to be heard. Our stories deserve to be represented. And every student deserves an education where they feel seen, supported, and valued.
At SEAT, we believe students should have a voice in the decisions shaping their education. We will continue advocating for schools where every student belongs.
Because decisions about students should include students. 💜

For Cameron, their advocacy started locally. From once feeling isolated, to discovering the fire underneath the student movement against book bans, Cameron trail-blazed hundreds of initiatives against book bans statewide in directing SEAT.

“Find what others are doing and join them. Find what others are not yet doing and be bold enough to start it” says Cameron Samuels, SEAT’s Executive Director and Co-founder at Penguin Random House’s Save Our Stories Supper. Students at SEAT are reclaiming the narrative because ultimately we are the experts of our lived experiences, not the ones banning books.

Just kidding… don’t let book banners fool you. Students have the power to make banning books a challenge by supporting current initiatives fighting censorship and uplifting the freedom to read.

We all deserve to be the deciders in what we read and learn. As this year’s comes to a close, keep reading banned books and fighting the bans!
