A message to the members of Da’Cipher 360, both men and women. Here me clearly, no one is coming to save us, we must save ourselves! We have a moral duty to return to our communities, at whatever point of entry you can find, and start there by using your voice to teach and educate those who would listen to our cries.

Many of us have read books that others have not and may never, should we sit on this or dispense it to the public? I say, dispense! We can change the climates in our communities by uniting and suing our lived experiences as a force for movement building. That is the example that I am setting, right here and right now. I am not waiting on permission. It is now or never!

I was thankful for the last few days that afforded me time to visit Houston and to connect with my brother and member of Da’Cipher 360, Parks We visited and caught up, and had the privilege of learning with others about the hazards that may look ahead in relation to the upcoming elections. We may or may not be on the frontlines of this battle, be we are definitely not going to be on the sidelines, neither sidelined by ignorance or willful self-destruction. I am thankful for where we are heading and looking forward to you joining us for some of our upcoming educational programming for Justice System Impacted men, families and Communities who want to work for Voting Rights Restoration in Texas.

The Formerly Incarcerated, Convicted People and Families Movement (FICPFM) is a national network of civil and human rights organizations led by people with conviction histories and their family members. We are committed to creating safer and healthier communities and transforming the criminal legal system. We advocate legislatively and judicially through direct organizing and stakeholder education in the communities where we live and serve.

This can't happen without those system impacted members of society choosing to join in the cause. It is with that sense of importance that I have vowed my life to this cause. It is my duty to educate those around me, and to be a force of attraction to bring them into the orbit of the movement for community driven power upheld by a national base of those persons affected by the justice system living in prison or with a conviction.

We are on the rise! It will take every hand that is available to put in this work. No one is irrelevant, we all matter to this endeavor. We met in prison, freed our minds and used our creativity and will to forge a future out of one that we had been written off from.

Thank you for sharing! It is powerful, important and true. I remember when the opened Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility for so-called “enemy combatants” after 9/11 and engaged in torture but denied it as a governmental practice. Folk were up in arms when they saw those images of naked and twisted bodies of foreign combatants with hooded faces and heads. I wasn’t surprised or shocked. I began to tell folk this is happening everyday in U.S. prisons to prisoners, humans called prisoners!
