This week on Adventures in Sound: It's the first of two Pride Month Shows in 2026!
Join us for our 21st Annual Before Stonewall Show! On these shows, we highlight GLBT singers, songwriters, and producers whose careers flourished before the start of the modern Gay Liberation and Pride movements. The June 20 show will feature recordings mostly from the 1920s and 1930s. Among the featured artists will be Noel Coward, Libby Holman, Leslie "Hutch" Hutchinson, and others. This show is dedicated to the memory of Taylor Cage (who hosted KOOP’s Q***r Waves). It’s happening today, Saturday, June 20 from 1 to 2 p.m. on 91.7 FM (and koop.org).

Today The Singer and the Song welcomes Whalen Nash to the KOOP studios. Whalen spent a lot of years making music here in Austin, and he's also a friend mine. So when do I finally get him on the show? After he moved to Maryland! He's in town right now, though, and I'm honored to welcome him to The Singer and the Song. He's a fascinating guy and a great singer songwriter, as you will hear when he performs on the show, playing live for us the whole hour on KOOP 91.7 FM and koop.org, 3-4pm, Saturday, June 20th. Join us in amplifying Juneteenth, with a breakdown of the many events celebrating this important holiday around the City of Austin. June 19th is a historic date both nationally and in Texas as it was the day Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. Here is a list of all the celebrations today:

1) Montopolis Proud Juneteenth Celebration / Friday June 19th / Two Locations:
-8:30 AM - 10:00 AM (History Montopolis Negro School, 500 Montopolis Drive, Austin, TX 78741)
-10:00 AM - 3:00 PM (Montopolis Recreation Center, 1200 Montopolis Drive, Austin, TX 78741)

2) 2026 Juneteenth Parade / Friday June 19th at the Corner of Leona Street and E. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard / 10am till 12pm

KOOP is amplifying the Juneteenth Holiday on June 19th with 8 celebration events happening around Austin and supported by the City. Today's event is the "Free Your Mind Symposium - Artist Talk with Hakeem Adewumi" at the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center, 1165 Angelina Street, Austin, TX 78702.

Join artist Hakeem Adewumi and Rachel Winston, Black Diaspora Archivist at the University of Texas at Austin, for an intimate conversation about Seeing Further — a mixed-media exhibition exploring Juneteenth as a living Black Southern tradition rooted in Texas mythology, African spirituality, and the supernatural. Hakeem shares the personal history, family objects, and landscape that shaped the work, and what it means to make art that listens to ancestors.

On June 16, the Boots on the Air crew ... former US Army SP4 Brown, retired US Army First Sergeant Perry Jefferies, and former DoD Civilian Greg Ciotti ... were recognized by TVC for the 2025 show segment titled "After 27 Years of Abuse and Bureaucracy, Navy Vet Finally Gets Honorable Discharge."

Today on The Singer and the Song host Rush Evans welcomes Trish Wesevich to the KOOP studios. Trish has been making music in Austin for 25 years, much of which has been in jazz and swing and with many other artists. She's also a great singer and songwriter, so on the radio, that's what we're gonna focus on: Trish's own music, front and center. She's a delightful person and wonderful musician, as you will hear her as she performs on the show, playing live for us the whole hour on KOOP 91.7 FM and koop.org, 3-4pm, Saturday, June 13th.
