Check out the nonpartisan issues we’re working on to make the state a better place for all. Expanding healthcare access doesn't have to cost the taxpayers significantly. We need increased transparency and 21st century solutions. The state is facing an historic housing crisis largely brought on by archaic rules preventing growth. Modernizing zoning and tax rules can create affordable homes at a profit to developers.

In the bustling aisles of a San Antonio grocery store, young mother Maria contemplates her family's healthcare coverage. Like millions of Texans, Maria relies on Medicaid, a vital program providing health services to low-income individuals and families. However, recent issues within Texas's Medicaid system have cast a shadow of uncertainty over many, reflecting the complex landscape of healthcare in the Lone Star State.

Medicaid, a federal-state initiative, is essential in Texas, offering coverage for doctor visits, hospital care, mental health services, prescriptions, and more. Specialized programs like STAR Kids cater to children with unique healthcare needs. Despite its importance, Texas has faced significant challenges in managing Medicaid applications and renewals. In 2023, 39% of applications were delayed beyond the federal 45-day standard, leaving over 150,000 families in prolonged uncertainty. Additionally, nearly 1.7 million Texans lost Medicaid coverage due to the unwinding of continuous coverage rules expanded during the pandemic, causing widespread concern about eligibility and access to health benefits.

Addressing these challenges, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is reallocating staff to focus on application backlogs and training new employees for Medicaid services. There's a push for better use of technology, like automated eligibility systems, to improve efficiency and access. However, the backlog continues to be a significant hurdle, impacting countless families and individuals dependent on Medicaid for their healthcare needs.
