Texas says air conditioning its prisons would create “chaos and confusion.”

You know what’s chaotic? Letting people suffer and die in dangerous heat, then fighting a federal court order to do something about it.

TDCJ has appealed the ruling requiring Texas prisons to be air conditioned by 2029.

The chaos isn’t the court order. It’s the decades of deliberate inaction.

We fought for this ruling, and we’re not backing down.

Yesterday, we joined advocates, families, and community members at the 27th Annual March to Abolish the Death Penalty at the Texas Capitol.

It was especially meaningful to be with Melissa Lucio's family again and witness their incredible love and support for her.

We will always stand with Melissa and her family, and we will never stop fighting for justice.

Progress isn't always a straight line, but setbacks are not defeat! Our hope and commitment remain steadfast.

They called us dangerous. We decided to own it. 🔥

Dangerous Women is about reclaiming the narratives that have been written about us and celebrating our power, our joy, and our stories on our own terms.

And because a Dangerous Women party deserves a dangerous performance… Anastasia F Steel is taking the stage. 😈🔥

Austin, we’ll see you October 17.

Jennifer Toon explains why Lioness chose to join the fight over deadly heat in Texas prisons, even knowing there was risk involved. Many of our members are still incarcerated or living under parole supervision, meaning the same system we were challenging still had direct power over people in our community. We joined anyway, because staying silent while people suffered in dangerous heat was never an option.

They didn’t know it then, but they were walking straight toward history. 💜

Directly impacted women & gender expansive people organized, fought back, sued Texas over dangerous prison heat, and won a major federal court ruling.

Never underestimate those who’ve had enough. 🔥

In a 5–4 decision, Texas’ highest criminal court denied relief to Melissa Lucio, rejecting the trial court’s recommendation to overturn her conviction.

Melissa remains on death row, but this fight is not over. Her legal team has announced plans to take her case to federal court.

As directly impacted women and gender expansive people, we know what it means to fight a system that refuses to hear you. Melissa’s case is at the heart of why Lioness was formed.

We stand with Melissa. We stand with her family. And we will keep saying her name.
The fight continues.

We Were Organizing Before We Ever Called It Organizing -

From a historic victory in our fight against deadly prison heat to continuing the everyday work of supporting our members and building power across Texas, this month reminded us just how far we’ve come and why we keep going.

This right here.

"These Texas advocates call themselves 'lionesses" for a reason: They don't say backing down is not in their nature.

A group led by formerly incarcerated women spent years advocating for those trapped inside prison walls during Texas' hot summers.

09/23/2026

Listen to that again: the Court did not find TDCJ’s commitment to installing air conditioning credible.

After years of promises, plans, delays, and people continuing to suffer in deadly Texas prison heat, the Court looked at the evidence.

Even the Chairman of the Texas Board of Criminal Justice described TDCJ’s purported plan as “a little bit more than swag.”

This is why Lioness v. Lumpkin matters. And why the judge ruling in our favor matters!

We didn’t need another promise.

We needed accountability. We needed a timeline. And most importantly, people inside need relief.

Now we make sure this order becomes reality.
