The legendary San Antonio musician Augie Meyers, whose distinctive Vox organ sound helped to shape Tex-Mex rock, has passed away at the age of 85. Meyers was a founding member of the Sir Douglas Quartet and the supergroup Texas Tornados, and recorded with many others including Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Tom Jones. His signature sound influenced decades of rock ‘n’ roll musicians, and the unique blend of Tex-Mex, rock and Conjunto styles brought the Sir Douglas Quartet and the Texas Tornados international success. Meyers was a longtime member of AFM Local 433.

When meeting with elected officials, accountability is not only appropriate—it is essential to protecting our profession and our rights. As a union president and as a citizen, it is my responsibility to question their motives, examine their platforms, and ensure that their promises align with real action. Musicians and creative workers are too often overlooked in policy decisions, despite our vital contribution to culture and the economy. By asking direct, respectful, and informed questions, we make it clear that our voices matter and that our livelihoods are not negotiable. Holding politicians accountable helps prevent our rights from being ignored or trampled, and it reinforces that public office exists to serve the people—including working artists—not special interests.

✨New Member Monday✨

Liam McManus is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, studying with Matthew Strauss of the Houston Symphony. Hailing from Buffalo, New York, he’s been a percussionist for 14 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he studied primarily with Michael Burritt; and a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, where he studied with Timothy Genis, Will Hudgins, and Matthew McKay of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
