Austin’s housing debate again collided with questions of neighborhood identity.
The Austin City Council voted on March 26 to advance a measure that could reframe where and how the city grows. The resolution, which passed with one dissenting vote, directs staff to prepare code amendments to allow more “missing middle” housing — fourplexes, townhomes, and small apartment buildings — in or near single-family neighborhoods.
At that meeting the council also passed other resolutions that could alter neighborhoods by allowing more small businesses in single-family homes, as well as reducing parking requirements.
