Many historically Black public schools in Texas are named in honor of educators and civil rights leaders who blazed trails to educate newly emancipated African American children and expand opportunities for generations to come. At Equity Kids, we know there is still much work ahead, but these leaders built the foundation we stand on today. Read more about who they were and the lasting impact of their work:

A look at the educators, activists and trailblazers honored at schools across Austin and Texas.

This Black History Month, Equity Kids recognizes the integral role of immigrant communities across our country.

Immigrant communities are diverse and include members of the Black diaspora. In Minneapolis, Somali immigrants are experiencing heightened fear due to targeted ICE operations and inflammatory rhetoric. Haitians are facing renewed threats to their protected status. These attacks tear apart families and traumatize children.

Immigrant justice is Black history. The same systems that disproportionately disenfranchise Black Americans also target and criminalize immigrants. Equity Kids stands for justice and compassion for a world free of racism.

This year marks 100 years since Carter G. Woodson founded the first Negro History Week to commemorate "the Black past," a legacy which Equity Kids strives to embody through our work.

Woodson recognized that the achievements of Black Americans were excluded from the United States history narrative, and he sought to change that. In "Carter Reads the Newspaper" by Deborah Hopkinson and illustrated by Don Tate, Carter Woodson's curiosity begins as a young boy learning to read, and we learn how Woodson's efforts evolved into Black History Month as we now know it.

Equity Kids is expanding our horizons and reaching even more communities in 2026. To kick off Black History Month, Equity Kids joined Many Mothers in Santa Fe, NM which included activities for children and a presentation from our very own board member, Cathy Ansheles.

Equity Kids is proud to celebrate Black History Month this year by engaging diverse communities, honoring traditions, and advocating for change from the ground up.

Equity Kids honors the courage, compassion, and conviction of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today.

King warned that well-meaning allies who stay silent in critical moments allow injustice to persist.

Many may fear becoming a target, or don't wish to cause ripples. However, by choosing silence for our own comfort, we become complicit in the perpetuation of injustice.

In the wake of the murder of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, King's words hit especially hard. We cannot remain silent witnesses to injustice. At Equity Kids, we recognize that real change begins with how we educate our children and what values we raise in them. Will you choose to be courageous and support the enduring efforts of great leaders like King?

Recent Texas law changes aim to silence organizations like Equity Kids, but we remain steadfast and are expanding our capacity to create diverse, inclusive learning spaces for youth.

Our work thrives through community partnerships, like with El Ranchito Camp,
who shared: “The training for our staff is the best quality… helping build our camp community and the character we want to instill in the youth we serve.”

With your support as a monthly giver in 2026, we can expand our reach and deepen our impact. Please consider adding Equity Kids to your end of year giving, our work is more important now than ever before:

Equity Kids is growing, from just 8 youth in our pilot program in 2021, to now over 100 kids served this past year. It's all thanks to supporters like you who believe in the possibility of a better world.

This GivingTuesday, you can help us keep that momentum going:
• Make a gift in any amount to Equity Kids!
• Share our mission with your community
• Support local nonprofits building equity & belonging

Kids start forming ideas about race far earlier than many realize. Your support helps us create diverse, transformative spaces where they can learn, connect, and grow!

After a day of togetherness and gratitude with family and friends, Equity Kids celebrates Native American Heritage Day. On this day, as a part of Native American Heritage Month, Equity Kids commits to our mission of rejecting racism, and to do that through education and cross-cultural encounters in early childhood. Dr. Debbie Reese of Nambe Pueblo with our partners over at Embrace Race has produced a guide for "Choosing Excellent Children's Books By And About American Indians." This is a great resource for parents and educators looking to expand children's minds with positive, non-stereotypical representations of Native American people. https://buff.ly/ZgmxbEl
