Spent some days this week at the Capital advocating for changes to support first responders state wide πŸ™ŒπŸ‡¨πŸ‡± πŸš’πŸš”

The biggest one we've been working on for years - it offers benefits to those most servery injured, our fully disabled responders and is modeled off similar support our partially and fully disabled veteran heroes receive.

Yesterday we reflected on 12 years ago

We had no idea how bad it was yet, we just knew living through it was something to be grateful for.

The 12 years of physical, mental and emotional recovery has been harder than ever expected but we will never take the time for granted.

This week Andy was asked to the TSAFF convention as a result of the bill we have been working on for 6+ years FINALLY BEING passed.
Thank you local 51 for being amazing hosts

We have mixed emotions on it...
If you don't want to read this all, skip to the end and just read that πŸ˜‰

- Incredible it finally happened!
- Overjoyed at the impact it will make for any responders who are severely injured on duty moving forward
- Sad that the kind, incredible and brave responder who joined our fight this session had to experience the same as us. This should have had backing and support years ago when we first fought for it. He and his family should not have had to battle like we did.
- Exhausted... well, mostly just because I (Amanda) had the bright idea our kids needed to experience their Dad's hard work after such a catastrophic injury. We pray it teaches them to never give up despite the odds, and that we can each turn something bad into a blessing for others.
- Bummed that the many many incredible Firefighters, Captains, Chiefs and Attorneys who volunteered weeks, late nights, trips to the capital and more to create build and lobby with us were not there. We hope we get to toast and high five each of you soon.

- READY.
This bills was SMALL. It does make a huge impact yes, but in reality it barely scratches the surface of the minimum that should be done for severely injured responders.
There is so much more work to be done and we are just getting started.

We have ideas, statistics, other bills to build on to provide more than the bare minimum for other responders.

Now that the bare minimum is done let's not stop. Let's continue to provide these brave Texans with support they deserve, and that most think they already have but sadly do not.

This is such a special day for us!
We've been working on this bill since 2018, when we first spoke at House committee in 2019 with one of our babies in arms.

Today the Texas Senate suspended the 3 day rule and voted with SUCCESS πŸ™Œ
NEXT STEP:

We are SO hoping to be there when it's signed 🀞 It would be such an honor coming full circle from 2019 testifying, to receiving the Star of Texas to being there when this change gets put in place.

β€’Does it help us personally? Nope.

β€’Will it make a HUGE difference for future responders injured? YES. More than they will ever need to know.

It's unfortunate it took years to get support (or, in some cases, just lack if opposition) from organizations, but LORDY was it worth it.

We are so appreciative of the members of both the Senate and House who have helped.
One thing we were so grateful is that they have been in favor and supported all along this journey to help push for improvements.

To all the fire service members who helped, took time to travel and testified, and who stood with us for this change over the past 5ish years THANK YOU.

Together it happened... now on to the next step.
