Happy Juneteenth!!!! On June 19, 1865, 2000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas announcing freedom to over 250,000 enslaved people in the state. Though they had been kept in bo***ge long after the Emancipation Proclamation and months after the end of the Civil War, manumission had arrived. White supremacy enabled oppression to continue in other forms but Juneteenth is a celebration of the end of chattel slavery in the United States. The 13th amendment would officially abolish slavery except as punishment for a crime.
