CASA volunteers partner with caseworkers, attorneys, and judges to keep a child’s best interest at the center of every decision, even as the child welfare system changes. 👏 While roles may shift over time due to turnover or large caseloads – whether the legacy system or Community-Based Care, CASA volunteers remain a STEADY presence in a child's life and are there for every major milestone. This consistent advocacy supports a child's whole team.

June is National Reunification Month! 🫂 CASA programs and their volunteers are trained in Collaborative Family Engagement — a team-based approach to identify family networks and a lifetime of support — to advocate for a child's best interest, including reunification whenever safe and possible.

Reunification is especially important because it allows children to return to the people and places they are familiar with and connected to — creating an invaluable sense of normalcy. With CFE, child advocates are able to identify and strengthen family connections that will love and support the child as they navigate the child welfare system. ❤️‍🩹

Did you know? Approximately 47% of children in Texas foster care are ages zero to five years old. 🚼

Children in this age group are more vulnerable to maltreatment and are unable to communicate as well as older children do. They make up the largest population served by CASA programs in Texas which is why it is so important to understand how to best support infants and young children as a CASA volunteer.

Children entering foster care face deeper trauma and often have greater mental health needs than their peers. ❤️‍🩹 Up to 80% of children in foster care experience significant mental health challenges, compared to roughly 20% of children in the general population.

CASA volunteers connect children and youth to the support services they need and partner with caregivers + caseworkers to schedule routine check-ups, specialist visits, and therapy sessions — ultimately helping ensure their mental health needs don’t fall through the cracks.

Thank you to Rose Isaguirre and friends for thinking about how the symbol of butterflies ties to our focus of Transforming Lives 🦋

When this group of friends got together for a fun painting day they each made their own butterfly then brought them to the CAC to share. What a meaningful and creative way to support our work and spread inspiration!

Volunteers make a HUGE difference!

Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) recently shared a "Story of Hope" about their volunteer Christina Albert and how her role as a child advocate has helped a family stay connected as they navigate the foster care system. ❤️‍🩹

Christina has shown determination and consistency in this family's life, traveling over 120 miles each month to visit them in person. She has also met with other immediate and extended family to build connections and provide support to encourage reunification. Her work and dedication is an admirable example of the passion CASA volunteers have and commitment to children in the foster care system.
