Forty-four years after Vincent Chin’s murder, the lessons of his story remain painfully relevant.

Vincent Chin was killed because of racism, anti-Asian scapegoating, and the false idea that Asian Americans are outsiders. His murder became a catalyst for the Asian American civil rights movement and a reminder of what can happen when fear and hate go unchecked.

Today, we honor Vincent Chin by refusing to accept division as inevitable. We remember his legacy by challenging anti-Asian hate, standing in solidarity across communities, and building a future rooted in justice, safety, and belonging for everyone.

Meet Ms. Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth.

Her story is Texas’ story. Juneteenth is Texas’ history.

Today, we honor Juneteenth as a celebration of Black freedom, resilience, and the generations of people who fought for liberation. We also recognize that our communities’ histories are deeply connected—and that our collective future depends on telling the truth about our past.

Our stories deserve to be told. Our students deserve to learn the full history of Texas.

🏳️‍🌈 What does AAPI mean to you? 🏳️‍🌈

Emmett Schelling, Executive Director of Transgender Education Network of Texas (TENT), shares his light with us this month. is the largest statewide, BIPOC trans-led, trans-focused policy, education, and advocacy organization in Texas.

As an AAPI, transgender Texan, Emmett leads by example at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities, championing visibility, equity, and dignity for communities too often pushed to the margins. Through his advocacy, he demonstrates that authentic leadership means showing up boldly, building bridges, and creating pathways for others to thrive. His work reminds us that representation matters, and that courageous leadership can transform communities, policy, and lives.

Emmett happily resides in Houston with his brilliant and loving wife and child, along with the family’s two adopted pups, Loki Poki and Otis. In his free time, he enjoys gathering with family and friends over great food and cheering on his favorite football teams.

Asian Texans are the margin of victory.

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month in May, our Executive Director, Nabila Mansoor, joined Spectrum News’ In Focus Texas to talk about the growing power of AAPI voters across our state.

From increasing voter participation to supporting newly naturalized citizens and young voters, our community is shaping elections and making its voice heard. At ATJ, we’re proud to help connect Asian Texans with the tools, information, and resources they need to participate in our democracy.

As APAHM comes to a close, the fight for recognition of our community continues. Data disaggregation is one of the many ways we can ensure visibility and equity for our communities. Right now, we have another opportunity to show up for our community and advocate for recognition.
