This is the story of Irpen, a dog who was fortunate enough to find a new life far from his homeland.
The Ukrainian military discovered a dog that survived the Russian invasion with a massive wound on its neck after it was freed from the Russians. A very kind and brave dog stayed calm and endured the pain with gritted teeth.

Upon his liberation from the Russians, a group of paramedics swiftly transported Irpen to a veterinary hospital. There, the compassionate team from KARG (Kyiv Animal Rescue Group) took charge of his care. Displaying immense courage, Irpen underwent various medical procedures, seemingly comprehending that his survival hinged on them. Thanks to the exceptional skills of the local veterinarians, Irpen's health steadily improved, hastening the quest to find him a new loving home.

Unexpectedly, a family in Portugal emerged as the perfect match for Irpen, even though it meant crossing over two thousand miles. In a heartwarming gesture honoring his origins, the new owners decided to preserve Irpen's name, a tribute to the city he once called home.

Sadly, the war in Ukraine has left countless animals in dire need of assistance. Together, we can make a difference and save the lives of these vulnerable creatures. During the war, Ukrainian organizations specializing in pet animals noted that:

πŸ”Έ the number of pets in shelters in the backhands rose by between 20% and 30%
πŸ”Έ in the frontline regions by 60%;
πŸ”Έ by as much as 100% in shelters near the front.

The vast majority of these animals are former pets. However, the number of people willing to take an animal from the shelter increased by 50%.

With the war's progress, animal rights activists' work does not become less. Natalya, an activist at the "Territory of Angels" animal rehabilitation center, says she currently cares for about 100 dogs and 300 cats. Over the entire period, her organization was able to take out about a thousand animals.

According to her, the problem of abandoned animals was acute even before the war, but now it has become more serious because many people evacuated themselves but left their animals behind.

Animal rights activists go to the de-occupied territories of Ukrainian cities and try to take the animals to safe places, clinics, and paid shelters, followed by the search for a new family.

Zookeepers save not only domestic animals but also farm animals, receiving requests from farmers to help feed or evacuate animals.

Following the shelling in Mykolaiv, a cat named Ambal was rescued from the debris. He appeared filthy, drooling, and had cloudy eyes.

During the initial medical examination, it was discovered that Ambal had suffered a broken jaw. Further evaluation revealed that the shrapnel responsible for his injuries had passed through his mouth, fracturing the jaw joint, distorting his eye, and becoming lodged behind his ear. Additionally, there was significant swelling in the joint, making it impossible for him to eat.

The medical professionals prescribed a treatment plan that involved addressing the swelling, removing the damaged eye, and extracting the shrapnel from his skull.

However, on the day scheduled for the procedure, Ambal underwent a blood test which indicated a high level of leukocytes. As a result, the operation had to be postponed. Despite the veterinarians' efforts to save him over the next few days, Ambal's kidneys failed one morning. The root cause was traced back to the leukocytosis triggered by the shrapnel lodged in his skull.

Ambal was tragically only a few days late in receiving the assistance he desperately needed. His story serves as a painful reminder of the devastating impact of this ongoing war in modern Europe.

Positive results from Animal-assisted therapy (AAT), when people interact with animals, is a proven fact. Such therapy differs depending on the type of animal, which is a key element in the treatment of patients.
