The City of Austin’s African American Heritage Network invites you to attend the 2022 Black History Virtual Celebration. This year’s event will be centered around the national theme of Black Health & Wellness. This theme is an appropriate topic to explore as we recover from our communities’ economic devastation and health crisis. We are excited to focus on preventive measures to prepare ourselves for pandemics in the future. Therefore, AAHN has expanded the theme to target the three main areas for our community, Education, Economics & Equity.

Join us on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at 11:00 am.

Register on Eventbrite by 8 am on Tuesday, February 15, 2022. A link will be sent out to those who register 2 hours before the event begins.

I rose this morning reminiscing about the great MLK Day celebrations we experienced growing up in Austin. Waking up really early, dressing in layers, putting on our good walking shoes and heading out into the brisk cold and typically sunny day. I remember the excitement of joining thousands of Austinites of all ages and backgrounds march from the east side of Interstate 35 to the steps of the State Capitol. What a beautiful scene as I look back at the crowd coming down the hill of 11th Street full of people holding banners and signs, playing music, performing choreographed chants and singing spirituals. I remember the happiness of running into familiar faces, the exchange of hugs and hand-shakes and shouts of laughter. But most importantly, I remember the feeling of pride and community. Although we are experiencing a shift in this celebration again this year, we can still honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and celebrate the day with service to others. The Austin Area Heritage Council has canceled the traditional annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March and festival to ensure our safety. However, they plan to celebrate with a Virtual Rally at 10:30 am via Facebook and YouTube. For more information, please check out their website at mlk.celebration.com.

I will be supporting the Austin Area Food Bank and hope you will join me in donating to a charity that will serve our community as we celebrate MLK Day in our new normal.

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!!!
