🚨BREAKING: OpenAI is testing Private Safety Processing, a new system for eligible enterprise and API customers that can identify suspicious patterns across multiple AI interactions without exposing the underlying prompts or responses to OpenAI personnel.

Rather than retaining raw conversations, the system generates limited safety signals while maintaining Zero Data Retention protections. The approach could be particularly valuable for industries such as healthcare and finance, where protecting sensitive information is critical.

California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey allege Meta engineered Facebook and Instagram to maximize youth engagement while collecting data from children under 13 without parental consent. Meta disputes the claims.

The stakes go beyond COPPA: the case could push privacy law from asking how companies handle data to whether they should be collecting certain data in the first place.

🚨BREAKING: For the first time, the U.S. court system plans to track when law enforcement uses spyware or hacking tools to intercept live communications.

The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts says a new hacking/spyware category will be added to its wiretap reporting. The first meaningful statistics are expected in the 2028 report, published in 2029.

One important limit: this will cover hacking used for live interception of communications, not every case where authorities remotely access or search a phone, computer, or other device. It’s a narrow window - but a new one - Into how hacking tools are being used for surveillance.

🚨BREAKING: A new Axios report today highlights a fast-emerging privacy question: What happens to the deeply personal information people disclose to AI assistants? The issue is no longer limited to whether chats are used to train models.

As assistants become more personalized, providers may use conversation history, inferred preferences, and behavioral signals to build persistent profiles that shape future responses. That could make AI dramatically more useful - while also creating a far more intimate category of personal data than search history or social-media activity.

Apple, Meta, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and other major AI companies take materially different approaches to memory, personalization, data retention and model training.

The next major AI privacy debate may be less about what a chatbot remembers from one conversation - and more about what it gradually learns about you.

🚨BREAKING: British Transport Police has expanded its Live Facial Recognition (LFR) trial into London Underground stations, with the first deployment taking place at Victoria.

The trial, now extended until November, will rotate between Underground and Network Rail stations.

The technology scans faces against an authorised watchlist of people wanted by police or the courts, or those subject to certain conditions. Any potential match is reviewed by an officer before further action is considered.

BTP says the deployments will be intelligence-led, targeted and proportionate, with alternative routes available for people who do not wish to enter the recognition zone.

🚨BREAKING: Flock Safety is cutting its default license-plate data retention from 30 days to 7 days - while adding mandatory misuse detection, case codes for police searches, and automatic lockouts for suspicious activity. CEO Garrett Langley put the shift plainly: “We got this one wrong.”

At least 50 officers have reportedly been accused or charged with misusing license-plate-reader systems, with Flock technology involved in 46 cases - including alleged stalking and harassment. A tool built to solve crimes can also create a powerful, searchable record of where people travel.

Seven days is a meaningful reduction, but it doesn’t end the surveillance debate. Existing customers can still keep longer retention periods, and civil-liberties groups say stronger independent oversight is still needed.

Should a surveillance network this powerful have depended on voluntary safeguards in the first place?
