YO NYC!!!
Not to be missed: 2025 Screenwriting Alum 's film at this weekend.

It's is a tale of comedy, obsession, transness and how art ages over time told through the thick spectacles of the cult 1990s character Pat from SNL.

Friday May 29-Thursday June 4

Ticket link: https://www.dctvny.org/s/firehouse-film/we-are-pat-MCYXPYXHT4QZAVHHPRIMIHTPDDG4

"We Are Pat" is a feature length documentary exploring the evolution of gender identity and comedy from the 90s to now through the lens of the iconic SNL sketch, It’s Pat. The film examines Pat’s origins as a joke rooted in cultural anxiety of the 90s around gender while drawing striking parallels to today’s culture wars around transness and queerness. Trans and non-binary comedians and culture-makers reimagine and rewrite the original Pat sketches, using camp and humor to reclaim and re-envision an iconic character in American comedy. The film explores humor as both a tool of oppression and a radical force for change. Beyond comedy, We Are Pat raises complex questions: How does art age? What responsibility does a creator have as cultural values evolve? Can we reclaim narratives that once mocked us, transforming pain into laughter, visibility, and ultimately, our own creations?

We are so very and so deeply saddened by the great and tragic loss last week of the gifted Michael Harrison, a brilliant composer, a wonderful friend and a true visionary.

His genius and generosity, as well as his music, will continue to shine brightly for a long time to come: we will never forget his sitar and piano playing in our Composers Suite (Michael returned to Millay Arts several times over the years) to the delight of all.

Rest in Power Michael.

For more (NYTImes, 4/24/2026):
"Michael Harrison, a composer and pianist whose richly resonant, spiritually inclined compositions and improvisations, many for pianos he radically redesigned, drew on his deep knowledge of Indian raga and nontraditional tuning systems, died on April 17 in Manhattan. He was 67."

CONGRATULATIONS MODNEY (Composing, 2022) on being named to the prestigious roster of 2026 Guggenheim Fellows!

"Modney is a composer and violinist working at the nexus of composition, improvisation, and interpretation. A “new-music luminary” (The New York Times) hailed as “one of today’s most intrepid experimentalists” (Bandcamp Daily), Modney is a foremost interpreter of adventurous contemporary music, and has cultivated a holistic artistic practice as a composer, solo improviser, bandleader, writer, and collaborator. A highly detailed relationship to sound production on the violin is foundational to Modney’s creative practice, with a particular interest in complex timbres, Just Intonation, and in exploring the perceptual space between improvisation and notation.

Modney’s 2024 release of chamber music, Ascending Primes (Pyroclastic Records), featuring acclaimed creative musicians such as Anna Webber, Nate Wooley, Charmaine Lee, Ben LaMar Gay, and Cory Smythe, has been hailed as “a torrential and stunning record, which sounds like nothing else and serves as a peremptory statement: there is a new school in New York (Blow Up Magazine – Italy)”, and as a “detail-packed endeavor that’s as wondrous as it is demanding (Peter Margasak, Bandcamp Daily).”

Modney will be performing this summer at PS21 Chatham in June with the International Contemporary Ensemble... stay tuned for more info.

WOW!

We are more than thrilled to have received a generous inaugural grant from the Stephen Sondheim Foundation that will allow us to expand our residencies for playwrights, composers and lyricists!

(A bit of history: did you know that James Lapine wrote "Sunday in the Park with George" while in residence at Millay Arts in 1978? Did you know this was followed by a Pulitzer Prize in Drama for both James and Sondheim in 1984?)

We are so proud to have played a part in the success of "Sunday in the Park with George," as well as all of the thousands of works that a stay at Steepletop has made possible. (Since 1973, we have hosted more than 3000 multidisciplinary creators.)

Speaking as an Honoree for our 50th Anniversary celebration in 2023, James emphasized the vital importance of our mission: providing the gift of unfettered time and space to exceptional creators so they can do what they do best: create.

We remain dedicated to this singular and essential vision for the future, and are immensely grateful to the Stephen Sondheim Foundation for this extraordinary recognition and much needed support.

The Stephen Sondheim Foundation is dedicated to supporting playwrights, composers and lyricists for the theatre, particularly those who are in the early stages of their careers, with funds generated from the royalty income earned by his works posthumously.

The Foundation is committed to supporting future generations of theatre artists through annual grants to organizations that will afford them the time, space, collaboration, feedback and mental health support required to create new works that will expand the art form and “give us more to see.”

Needless to add, we promise to ensure the creation of new theatre works that include the promise of giving us all "more to see!"

WHAT A JOYOUS START TO MARCH! A surfeit of exhibitions featuring two of our dedicated and talented Board members and a gifted alum... Run don't walk to see this trio of wondrous shows: gotta love the women painters!

From top, left to right, clockwise:

Couldn't resist adding a snapshot of peonies outside of Vincent's house at Steepletop (planted by her decades ago and still thriving...)

Monet offers:

Millay Arts is such a special place to me as an artist. This past December, I had the privilege of sharing the magic of Millay with my writers' group. Our tight-knit group is scattered across the globe and meets biweekly over Zoom. We have gathered in person only a few times over the last few years, and many members have never experienced the power of a writers' retreat in the woods. So, when the opportunity for the Group Residency arose, we jumped at the chance to apply. That particular week, we had exactly one day of sunshine before a huge snowstorm came in, blanketing the property in several inches of snow. Snug and cozy in our studios, Millay offered us the rare opportunity to live and work together in community for a few days, free from the demands or pressures of family, work, or industry, in a calm and serene landscape. We deepened our bonds as a group and our craft as artists. Millay is now a special place for all of us.
