Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley

Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley The CFFRV serves the Greater Aurora Area, the TriCities and Kendall County in Illinois. Foundation funds provide grants to non-profits and scholarships.

In 1943, Charles Hoefer, then publisher of the Aurora Beacon-News, convened a group of community leaders to study post-war plans for a better Aurora. Weekly luncheon meetings were held "at the round table" in the Elks Club in downtown Aurora. The war years were inflationary. Manufacturing plants were operating at full capacity and were extremely profitable. Corporate income taxes were excessively

high and business leaders were seeking ways to redirect their profits from onerous taxation to the service of local needs. Conditions thus were favorable for the formation of a philanthropic vehicle -- a community foundation -- which would allow for the accumulation of tax-deductible contributions when convenient for the donors. Assets so accumulated would be retained for later distribution to charitable causes as suggested by the donors. These reservoirs of charitable gifts, known as Advisory Funds, could be named after the companies and individuals contributing the gifts. In June 1948, a formal structure was given to this concept through the establishment of The Aurora Foundation. The first annual meeting was held on November 23, 1948, at the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. Aurora industrialist William B. Greene was elected president, a position he held for thirteen years. Attorney Frank R. Reid, Jr. served as the Foundation's first secretary and legal counsel. Since 1948, the Foundation has grown from 1 charitable fund with assets of $5,000 to 436 charitable funds with assets of over $70 million. Although Advisory Funds remain an attractive vehicle for charitable donors, other types of funds have become important to the Foundation and its role within the community. Scholarship funds have distributed over $11 million to local students. Funds also have been created to benefit social service agencies, educational and healthcare organizations, the arts and culture, religious institutions and the environment. Grants and scholarships awarded by the Foundation since its founding total more than $50 million. In 2006, the Foundation adopted a new name to more accurately reflect the communities it has always served. The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley continues the proud tradition of The Aurora Foundation by reaching out to citizens of the Greater Aurora Area, the TriCities and Kendall County. Throughout its history, the Foundation has been governed by a Board of Directors comprised of civic-minded business and community leaders. The Foundation's current board of directors invites the participation of all who wish to be a part of our continuing development as a charitable resource for area citizens.

YEP Grantee Spotlight: Quad County Urban League

This summer, Quad County Urban League is helping young learners explore, create, and grow through its S.T.E.A.M. Youth Summer Camp, supported in part by a YEP grant. The six-week camp provides a safe and enriching space for 60 youth ages 7–12 to build skills in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math while developing confidence, teamwork, and leadership.

Each week introduces a new area of discovery, from learning about diverse leaders in S.T.E.A.M history to hands-on science experiments, drone exploration, engineering challenges, arts activities, and math-focused field trips. Designed especially for underrepresented youth across the Greater Aurora Area, Tri-Cities, Kendall County, and Southern Kane County, the camp encourages curiosity while helping students see themselves in high-demand career pathways.

By keeping children engaged and supported during the summer months, Quad County Urban League is nurturing the next generation of creative problem-solvers, compassionate leaders, and community changemakers.

YEP: Summer Impact Through Service

A recent YEP service project is bringing lots of smiles to the youth at Mercy Housing. YEP members decorated brown paper bags with inspirational messages and artwork for the children's snacks during the summer months.

"Thank you to YEP for the decorated bags. The inspirational messages and artwork for the children's snacks during the summer months. The children enjoy coming to the office to grab a couple of snacks and seeing all the different art, quotes, and sayings. Every bag is so unique and inspiring to many of the 200 children that call Mercy Housing home," shared Lynn Queen, Resident Services Coordinator.

Featured Fund: Eldon R. & Evelyn E. Rackmyer Parochial Schools Endowment Fund

In March, long-time Aurora resident Evelyn Rackmyer passed away at the age of 105. Evelyn was very active with a number of Aurora organizations through the years. She continued volunteering at the Museum Store for the Aurora Historical Society until her "retirement" in 2013 at the age of 92.

Evelyn had a deep love of learning and a strong passion for reading. In 2007, she established the Eldon R. & Evelyn E. Rackmyer Parochial Schools Endowment Fund to support St. Rita of Cascia School in Aurora with grants. She was a wonderful example of a life well lived, one rooted in service to community, care for others, and a deep belief in the promise of education for our youth.

YEP members recently turned old T-shirts into braided dog toys as part of a hands-on service project benefiting the pups at Kane County Animal Control. Before delivery, the toys were carefully “tested” and received an enthusiastic dog-approved rating!

Great job, YEP, for finding a creative way to reuse materials and bring joy to local animals.

$126,000 Provided to Local Food Pantries

As food insecurity continues to affect children, seniors and families across our region, the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley has awarded $126,000 in grants through the Emergency Food Relief Fund to help address the immediate food needs of residents in Kane and Kendall counties.

This fund is helping local food pantries respond to growing demand for nutritious food and essential pantry items. These grants will support local agencies working on the front lines of food relief. Based on information submitted by grantees, the funding is expected to help provide food assistance to additional individuals and families throughout the region, including thousands of meals for neighbors in need.

"As rising costs and SNAP reductions continue to take a toll on everyone, the pantry is seeing the effects firsthand. Each week, we're serving over 4,000 people including dozens of clients visiting the pantry for the very first time," shared Katie Arko, Executive Director of the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry, one of the Food Relief Fund grantees. "Our work in the community feels more crucial than ever. We are so grateful for your support. Together, we are ensuring everyone in our community can feed their families."

Board Spotlight: Matt Gilmore

Matt Gilmore has served on the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors since 2023 and was recently named Vice-Chair of the Board. A longtime Aurora resident, Matt brings both deep community knowledge and a strong belief in the Fox River Valley’s future. When reflecting on his hopes for the community, Matt shared:

“After 50 years in Aurora, I've seen this region's potential firsthand. My hope is that the Fox River Valley continues to use its resources strategically, building on our strengths in industry, technology, and connectivity to create a community where people want to build their lives and futures."

Matt sees the Community Foundation as an important partner in making that vision possible by connecting donors with the causes they care about most. Since 1948, the Foundation has awarded more than $30.7 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and scholarships for local students, investments that continue to strengthen lives and create opportunity across our community.
