The soundtrack to Thursday homeschool enrichment is kids talking to each other nonstop.

While they shell dried beans. Dig potatoes and carrots. Bake. Look at bones. Make food. Clean up. They kept talking.

Their hands were occupied with real work, which left plenty of room for conversation to wander wherever kids’ conversations wander.

And by this point in the session, they know each other. They know us. They know the place. That matters.

Our homeschool enrichment sessions run long enough for the group to become an actual group, not just a collection of kids who happened to sign up for the same activity.

Outdoor learning isn’t a break from academics. Done well, it gives kids real things to measure, notice, build, solve, remember, and care about.

Microschools are growing fast. They’re also wildly different from one another.

So if you’re considering one, the useful question isn’t just, “What is a microschool?”

It’s: Who is actually responsible for my child’s education? How are academics tracked? What does a normal Tuesday look like? How does a child join an already-small social group? And how long should you give a new school before deciding whether it fits?

Connection grows differently when kids don’t have to perform.

A familiar place. Something interesting to do with their hands. The same faces showing up again. Enough repetition for the nervous system to settle and connection to happen naturally.

We are loving that about bringing homeschool and Headwaters full-time kids together. Come back a few times, and you might just find your people ✨

Yes, it’s a sock puppet elective. It’s also narrative writing, character development, improvisation, collaboration, visual design, performance, and a surprising amount of thinking about why people do what they do.

This is one of the things our teachers are unusually good at: finding the big idea underneath something kids genuinely want to do, then building the academics through it.

And because we control curriculum at a very small scale, those ideas can spiral across the school. An elementary student might be naming a character trait. A middle school student can start working with motive, conflict, perspective, and narrative structure.
As Headwaters grows into high school, those same questions can keep getting more complicated. Not 13 separate schools happening under one roof.

One school. Big ideas revisited at increasingly sophisticated levels. We’re getting to see more of that coherence emerge in Year 2, now that the culture underneath it is strong enough to hold it. And it is incredibly good to watch.

This is why we run homeschool enrichment in multi-week Thursday blocks instead of one-off classes. The first few weeks build the thing we care about most: familiarity, trust, friendship, and the kind of belonging that lets kids settle in and really participate.

Our current session is underway, and the next block is opening now.

If your child would like a regular place to come back to each week - to garden, make things, learn practical skills, play, create, and know the people around them - we’d love to have them.

We spend one full day outdoors, offsite, year round.

And there is something important about returning to the same place again and again.

Last year, we spent a day each week at Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve through late summer, fall, and spring. So when we came back this year, there was no settling in period. The kids knew where they were. The staff knew where they were. The whole place felt familiar.

They also knew exactly how to begin.

When the macroinvertebrate charts came out, they already knew how to read them. They knew how to approach the creek, what to look for, how to collect, compare, and ask better questions. We weren’t spending the day introducing the field study from scratch. We could go deeper.

That’s one of the gifts of returning.

You can feel nervous systems relax inside that kind of repetition. The creek is not just “the creek.” They know where it runs high. The tables are not just somewhere to work. They remember who sat where, what they built there, what happened last season. The land starts to feel partly theirs, not as something to own, but as something they belong to and are responsible for.

That familiarity changes stewardship, too.

It is easier to care for a place when you know it. It’s very, very good to be back.

Our first homeschool enrichment session is live, and the next is open for registration - come spend late fall with us!

Meet Frost & Flame: six Thursday afternoons of seasonal making, outdoor survival skills, giving back, music, free play, and the kind of friendship that only really happens when kids get enough time together.

We’ll work with beeswax and wool. Make gifts. Look for tracks. Learn about fire, warmth, and shelter. Forage what fall leaves behind. Make useful things with our hands.

But the best part is simpler:

The same kids come back every Thursday.

They learn names. Then personalities. Then jokes. Then who will help hold the other end of the branch, the basket, the tablecloth.

That’s when an enrichment class starts becoming a community.

Our six weeks end with the Frost & Flame Winter Market, on the brink of solstice, when the kids become the makers, sellers, givers, and performers. Families come in. Kids set up their wares. Things they made with their own hands go out into the world.

We think it’s a pretty great way to spend November and December.

First days are weird.

Even when you’re excited. Even when you wanted to come. Even when you already know a few people.

There’s a new room to figure out. New adults. New kids. Where does my stuff go? Who do I sit with? What happens if I need help? Am I going to be okay here?

A brain doing all of that? It simply does not have a ton of room left for long division.

So we take the beginning seriously!

We blow bubbles. We wander the building. We learn names. We make goose tattoos an apparently important part of school culture. We show kids where things live and what happens next. We make room to stand back and watch before joining in.

We don’t need children to stop being nervous.

We want them to gather enough evidence that they’re safe here. That there are people to ask. That there is room for them. That they can exhale a little.

And then, gradually: play. Conversation. Curiosity. Work.

The first days aren’t what we do before the real learning starts. They’re part of it.
