ABOUT THE STUDENTS
The women who come to the Dominican Literacy Center are immigrants from many countries. All of the women have a common desire: to be able to communicate in their new country. Learning English language skills helps the women to become informed mothers, confident workers, and full participants in life in the United States. Any woman, age 17+, who wishes to learn to read, write an
d speak English is welcome to register at the Dominican Literacy Center. Students are individually tested and receive materials targeted to their goals and learning level. Students are set up with a volunteer tutor and meet weekly. Weekly sessions are 1 1/2 hours and they may also participate in twice-weekly Conversation Classes. Students select a weekly tutoring time which fits their schedules in the morning, afternoon or evening. ABOUT THE TUTORS
Volunteer tutors are assigned to a student on a 1to1 basis. All tutors receive 16 hours of training and on-going support from the Dominican Literacy Center staff. Tutors meet with students weekly, using ESL books, writing exercises, conversation practice, grammar exercises and computer materials. Tutors select a weekly tutoring time which fits their schedules in the morning, afternoon or evening. CITIZENSHIP
Part of the mission of the Dominican Literacy Center is to assist women and men
who are studying to take the naturalization test and become U.S. citizens. Volunteers and staff members provide two 12-week semesters of group classes to provide explanation, reinforcement and practice. Volunteers work individually with those who are scheduled to take their naturalization test. Adult students study long and hard to pass this difficult test.
