Kicking off recovery month with a banger! Please DM us your stories and a photo, we would love to highlight you! Recovery is real here in Augusta GA!

From Brittany E:

September 7, 2020 is my sobriety date. I was an IV drug user for almost a decade. Opiates were my drug of choice but I couldn’t turn down anything put in front of me. I’ve lost custody of my children twice. Narcan has saved my life a handful of times. Ive been to more treatment centers than I can count. It’s been almost 6 years and I’m living a life I never thought I could. I have all 3 of my daughters and they know they can count on me. I went back to school, and got my cosmetology license. I’ve been working for an amazing company for the last 3 years that supports me in all of my roles. I have a relationship with my family today and a loving, supportive partner. My life is no longer one crisis after another. That doesn’t mean there isn’t hard days, I just don’t make them any harder than they have to be. Long term recovery is possible!

We don’t usually share stories like this, but in light of recent criticism I want to explain what really happens at our outreach events.

Yes, people can come to us for naloxone, condoms, or even Plan B. But what you don’t always see is that each of these items becomes a bridge to an honest conversation, a way to build trust, and a small act of dignity for someone who needs it.

This past Saturday, a young woman came to us for supplies. She opened up about her situation and asked for help. Right there, we got on the phone to sort out her insurance issues and connected her directly with a treatment provider. Today, she got into an Uber on her way to a better path.

Would that have happened without those supplies? Hard to say. What I do know is that shaming her or criticizing her choices wouldn’t have gotten her into that car. Love and trust did. That’s the importance of meeting people where they are. That’s the beauty of harm reduction.

This woman isn’t the first to go from receiving supplies to stepping into treatment, and she won’t be the last. Thank you all for supporting this work and believing in the power of compassion.
