💙 We've delivered 26,143 books to kids in Kennebec County — and we're not stopping.

Since our first delivery in April 2025, we've enrolled over 2,300 children in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library right here in Kennebec County. We were even honored with United Way of Kennebec Valley's Impact2032 Partner of the Year award for 2025. Thank you for making that possible.

We know there's some confusion out there — state-level funding for the Imagination Library ended this year, which means local programs now rely entirely on community support to keep books flowing. Some county programs have had to close as a result.

The good news: Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec has already raised enough to fully fund our program through the end of this year. But we want to guarantee next year too — and that's where you come in.

Your gift goes directly to books, mailed monthly, free, to every enrolled child in the county: 📖 $2.60 delivers one book to one child. 📚 $31 gives one child a full year of books.

Help us honor Dolly Parton's commitment to opening the world of reading to every child:

You can also donate to LVK directly at https://lva-augusta.org/dolly-parton-imagination-library-of-kennebec-county/, or mail a check to 9 Green St, Suite G12, Augusta, ME 04330.

Every dollar goes to putting books in the hands of children in our community. Thank you for being part of this. Please follow and share our page with others in your circles.

The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec is to improve reading, writing and related literacy skills of adults so each individual may reach their potential, and to promote and advocate for literacy.

Dolly Parton gave the world songs people knew by heart.

Through her Imagination Library, she also gave millions of children something to hold in their hands: a book of their own.

What began as the idea of mailing a free, age-appropriate book to a child every month grew into a global movement helping children discover the joy of reading from the very beginning.

Since 2009, United Way has been proud to help carry that vision into communities, partnering with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library so more children could grow up with books of their own.

Dolly’s work showed how something as simple as a book could open a door to possibility. Her generosity and belief in children have helped shape generations of young readers.

We honor Dolly’s remarkable life, her friendship with United Way and the generations of young readers whose lives will continue to be shaped by the stories she helped place in their hands. Thank you, Dolly. ❤️

In 1995, Dolly Parton started mailing books to children in her home county to inspire children to love reading in honor of her dad, who couldn’t read or write.

That idea lives here too. Every month, more than 2,000 children in Kennebec County find a book in the mailbox — because of neighbors who fund it, volunteers who run it, and a woman from Sevier County, TN who started it all.

Thank you, Dolly. We will always love you.

To help Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec honor Dolly Parton's legacy and her commitment to opening the world of reading to every child, please consider a donation to LVK, earmarked for the book delivery program. Thank you.
