Last week, the Leadership Augusta Class of 2026 participated in Military Day, generously sponsored by ADP. Under the leadership of Day Chairs Dr. Tom Clark with CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon and Sheldon Moorer with SOFtact Solutions, the class explored the vital role Fort Gordon plays in our region.

The day began before sunrise as Leadership Augusta joined Leadership Columbia County at the historic Good Shepherd Chapel with chicken biscuits and coffee generously provided by Erik Smith, owner/operator of Chick-fil-A Grovetown. Scott Andersen provided the group with an overview of the installation’s history, followed by a garrison update from Colonel Anthony Kazor. Participants toured Clayton Barracks with the Drill Sergeant team and visited the U.S. Army Signal School. During lunch at the Cyber Conference & Catering Center, the class heard from Major General Mark D. Miles about the connection between Fort Gordon, national security, and our local economy.

The day also featured a Military Working Dog demonstration, a moving Funeral Honors and Flag Folding demonstration, and hands-on experience with the Engagement Skills Trainer 2000 weapons simulator. Participants also learned about programs that support service members and families, including Transitional Assistance Program (TAP), Hire Our Heroes, as well as Fort Gordon’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) amenities available to the community.

Military Day offered a powerful reminder of the significant economic, civic, and national security impact that Fort Gordon and our military partners have on the CSRA. A special thank you to the dedicated service members who shared their time, knowledge, and experiences with the class. Your commitment to serving our nation and supporting the Augusta community does not go unnoticed.
