The Kiwanis Club of Augusta recently welcomed Phil Wahl, President of Security Federal Bank, as our guest speaker.

Phil shared fascinating and candid behind-the-scenes stories from the legendary Augusta National Golf Club, offering a unique perspective shaped by his family's deep connection to one of golf's most iconic institutions. His father, Philip Wahl Sr., served as General Manager of Augusta National from 1961 to 1978, giving Phil a firsthand look at the club's rich history and many memorable moments.

From stories about golf's greatest traditions to personal anecdotes involving notable figures who visited Augusta National over the years, Phil's presentation provided an engaging glimpse into a side of Augusta history that few have had the opportunity to experience.

We appreciate Phil taking the time to share these remarkable stories and helping preserve an important piece of our community's heritage.

On May 18, the Kiwanis Club of Augusta welcomed fellow Kiwanian and current board member George McCall as our guest speaker, where he shared a fascinating presentation on the restoration and preservation of church stained glass windows at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church.

George provided insight into the artistry, craftsmanship, and history behind stained glass, explaining everything from how the glass is made and colored to the intricate techniques used in traditional stained glass design. He also discussed the challenges of preserving aging windows, noting that many stained glass installations from the 20th century begin to deteriorate after decades as the lead structure weakens over time.

Members learned about the importance of restoration efforts and why many historic stained glass windows cannot simply be repaired “in place.” His presentation highlighted both the beauty and complexity behind preserving these timeless works of art for future generations.

We are grateful to George not only for sharing his expertise with the club, but also for his continued leadership and service as a dedicated Kiwanis member and board member.

On May 11, the Kiwanis Club of Augusta welcomed Keith Hearon, accomplished biomedical engineer, entrepreneur, and Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, as our guest speaker.

A proud local Westminster Schools alumnus, Keith delivered a fascinating presentation on deep-technology entrepreneurship—the mission-driven world of developing innovative technologies designed to solve large-scale global challenges. His insights highlighted how cutting-edge science and innovation can create meaningful impact across industries and communities.

We also took time to celebrate a major milestone for one of our own. The club honored Lowell Dorn for his 25 years of dedicated membership and leadership as our longtime secretary/treasurer. Lowell’s contributions to Kiwanis have been truly invaluable, and we are grateful for his continued commitment to our club and community.

It was an inspiring meeting centered on innovation, leadership, and service.

The Kiwanis Club of Augusta recently had the pleasure of welcoming two inspiring community leaders as guest speakers—each sharing unique perspectives on how we can strengthen and grow the CSRA.

We welcomed Denise Tucker, Executive Director of the Greater Augusta Arts Council, who highlighted the organization’s broad impact across our region. From producing events to “producing possibilities,” the Arts Council plays a vital role in empowering local artists and activating a vibrant, thriving downtown Augusta.

We also heard from Catie McCauley, President and CEO of the YMCA of Augusta, who shared her message of “Shining Our Light Together.” Catie emphasized the power of collaboration and how working together across organizations can create meaningful, lasting impact in our community.

Together, these presentations served as a powerful reminder that whether through the arts, wellness, or community partnerships, connection and collaboration are at the heart of a stronger Augusta.

We’re grateful to both Denise and Catie for their leadership and for the work they do to make our region a better place to live, work, and grow.
