Lung cancer risk extends beyond smoking. In a study of 2.8 million women, personal cancer history was linked to 88% higher lung cancer prevalence, while family history of lung cancer was linked to 140% higher prevalence. Screening guidelines have not changed, but future risk models may include personal and family cancer history.

Tracey Miller faced cancer in her lungs twice, including surgery to remove her entire left lung in 2024. After 18 weeks of pulmonary rehabilitation, she returned to living life on her terms and cherishing time with her family. Her story highlights the value of follow up scans, specialized care, and rehabilitation after lung surgery.

Dennis Schmidt quit smoking in 2007. Fourteen years later, a low dose CT scan found Stage I lung cancer. Surgery treated it, and follow up scans found a second early cancer in 2025. Screening can find lung cancer when treatment is more likely to succeed. If you are ages 50 through 80 and have a smoking history, ask your healthcare provider if screening is right for you. Even if you quit years ago, your risk does not fall to zero.

Over 80% of patients diagnosed in the earliest stages survive five years or more, and screening increases the odds of early detection.

An unrelated CT scan found Carolyn Rothfeld’s stage 1A lung cancer before symptoms appeared. Nine months after robotic surgery removed part of her lung, she has returned to exercising but says recovery took longer than expected. NPR reported these findings through interviews with FDA officials and public health researchers.

The FDA allowed some Zyn ni****ne pouches to be marketed as "lower risk" than ci******es. Public health experts agree they can help current smokers, but worry young people may become addicted.
