Maine DAV Transportation

Maine DAV Transportation Serving those who have served, one mile at a time. Veterans may live a great distance from the VA hospital. They're left with two choices.

Many exist on small fixed incomes, finding the cost of transportation to a VA hospital is just too high. They could go without the treatment they need, or cut back on food or other necessities to pay for transportation. Veterans disabled in service to our nation, should never face such dire options. DAV donates vans to help the program work and DAV and Auxiliary volunteers responded, driving veter

ans to and from VA hospitals. Now we have other organizations and grateful Americans helping too. Its all part of the DAV Transportation Network, administrated by DAV Hospital Service Coordinators(HSC) at the VA's 172 medical centers.

TBT - The van shown in this 2015 image is the oldest vehicle currently serving in our fleet: a 2013 Ford E-350 12-passenger van. It was also our first van to sport the updated wrap with the new DAV color scheme. This 13-year-old workhorse continues to reliably transport veterans from the Bath-Brunswick/Midcoast area, thanks to the meticulous maintenance and loving care provided by volunteer driver John Starbird, who has been the principal driver for many years. This van will be retired and replaced in 2027.

Images from the Brunswick-Topsham Memorial Day Parade, May 25, 2026. Due to inclement weather, some Scouts who would otherwise march rode on the DAV float, and several members stayed dry in our van. (After the parade, Frank rounded a few up for a photo op.)

Maine DAV Transportation volunteer drivers are dedicated to helping Maine veterans get to Togus to get top-notch care at VA Maine Healthcare System.

The Department of Veterans Affairs today announced that 78% of VA hospitals that received an Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating earned four or five stars in the latest annual report from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
That’s the highest percentage since CMS first started rating VA facilities in 2023. Additionally, VA accounted for nearly 15% of all 5-star rated hospitals in the 2026 report. The new report marks the fourth consecutive year that VA facilities have outperformed non-VA facilities, and it’s the second year in a row that no VA hospital received a one-star rating.
