Announcing the TSU Junior Research Academy — Summer STEM Camp, August 3–7, 2026

The Division of Research and Innovation is launching the TSU Junior Research Academy, a one-week immersive STEM camp for rising 6th–8th graders, August 3–7, 2026, on campus. Campers spend four days running real experiments in physics, biology, microbiology, and chemistry, then present their findings at a Friday Research Showcase. The program is designed to introduce Houston middle schoolers to research — and to TSU — at the age when they are forming their sense of whether science is for them. Share with families.

Open to rising 6th–8th graders. The fee is $250 per camper, and enrollment is limited to 10 campers. Registration closes July 15 and the link and details are in the attached flyer but can also be found here. Please forward widely.

This is their inaugural cohort and the foundation for what comes next.

AMSE Multicultural Science Spotlight
Science for ALL: Honoring Representation in STEM

AMSE is excited to launch our weekly Multicultural Science Spotlight, a social media series celebrating scientists, researchers, and educators whose work reflects the power of culture, identity, discovery, and access in science education.

Each week, we will highlight a multicultural STEM leader whose story can inspire educators, students, and communities to see science as a space where everyone belongs.

This week’s reflection:
Who was the first person who helped you believe that science was for you?

It’s “graduation season” and I came across this wonderful story of resilience on my alma mater’s page that I had to share. Congratulations 🎉 and welcome to the 🧬 ‼️

Desiree Davis once toured the world with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Usher. Now, she’s bringing that same stage-tested discipline to the science classroom.

After two decades as a professional dancer, the native Houstonian returned to college to pursue a new calling: teaching middle school science.

Now cancer-free after battling breast cancer twice while completing coursework and teaching in a residency position, Davis has graduated summa cm laude from UH and is beginning her next chapter as a sixth-grade science teacher in CFISD.

Congratulations, Desiree! 🎓🤩

Today, the Association for Multicultural Science Education proudly celebrates Cinco de Mayo by honoring the rich culture, resilience, and lasting contributions of Mexican-American educators, scientists, engineers, innovators, and students who continue to shape the future of science education.

Science thrives when diverse perspectives, languages, traditions, and lived experiences are welcomed into spaces of inquiry and discovery. Mexican-American communities have strengthened STEM and STEAM education through leadership, creativity, family-centered values, cultural knowledge, and a deep commitment to opportunity and access for ALL learners.

As we celebrate today, AMSE recognizes the importance of representation in science classrooms and the power of culturally responsive teaching that helps students see themselves as thinkers, problem-solvers, and future leaders. From classrooms to laboratories, from engineering to environmental science, Mexican-American excellence continues to inspire generations.

Let us continue building a future where culture, community, and science work together to empower every child to dream boldly and achieve greatly.
