Last week, Woodland Jr./Sr. High School student Matthew joined our Career Tour to explore colleges, training programs and career opportunities across Maine.

He came home talking about the places he visited, and asking his family if they could take him back for an upcoming open house.

That is exactly what these experiences are meant to do: help students discover opportunities, ask questions and begin taking their next steps.

Thank you to Matthew’s mom for sharing this with us. We can’t wait to see where his curiosity takes him next. 💙

What does a future career look like? Sometimes you have to get out there and try it. ✈️⚓🔧

This week, GEAR UP Maine RISE students took career exploration beyond the classroom with hands-on experiences across Maine.

Students headed out on different career tours, with opportunities ranging from stepping into a flight simulator and learning about ground crew operations to exploring marine biology, small vessel design, ship operations and engine repair at Maine Maritime Academy. Other students got an introduction to defensive tactics and careers in law enforcement at CMCC.

The best part? Students weren’t just hearing about careers — they were getting a chance to see, touch, try and ask questions about what their own futures could look like.

A big thank you to the educators, partners and school staff who made these experiences possible — and to our students for jumping in and exploring something new. 💙

Last Spring, Jake attended his first 8th grade immersion experience at Maine Maritime Academy. This week, his mom shared something with us that stopped us in our tracks:

“You taking Jake last year is the whole reason he wants to go to college now. I am very thankful for that!”

Sometimes one experience is all it takes to help a student see a future they hadn’t imagined for themselves.

During National GEAR UP Week, we’re celebrating moments just like this, and the school specialists, educators, families and partners who make them possible.

What better way to celebrate GEAR UP Week than by getting out there and exploring what’s possible? 💙

We love this photo shared with us by a GEAR UP parent! Kotah and fellow students are spending three days exploring careers, campuses and new possibilities, including some hands-on robotics and engineering at the University of Maine.

Her mom says they’re “having a blast” and called it a great opportunity to see the schools and get a feel for college life.
