GEAR UP Maine

GEAR UP Maine Transforming futures Nineteen Maine school districts have participated in this federal grant program.

Since 1999, Maine’s GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) Program has been helping create sustainable cultures in Maine’s schools that support students from economically disadvantaged households in preparing for, accessing, and succeeding in postsecondary education. The GEAR UP program has been successful in supporting participating schools in increasing their

college-going culture; raising expectations among GEAR UP students, families, and staff that all students can plan for and be successful in postsecondary education; and academic preparation for postsecondary success.

Spring is a great time for students to explore college campuses, attend career fairs, and consider future pathways. You can support your student by asking what they are learning about different careers and helping them prepare questions before events or visits.

Encourage your student to follow up after meeting a college representative or employer. A simple thank-you email or conversation can build confidence and open new opportunities. If you would like guidance on upcoming events or how to support your student’s exploration, contact your GEAR UP School Specialist.

Career Fair Game Plan

Spring career fairs are your chance to explore what’s out there. Even if you’re not job hunting yet, you can ask employers:
• What makes someone successful in this field?
• What skills matter most in this field?
• What education or training is needed?
• Are there summer opportunities?
