M4A is a private, non-profit organization that is a unifying voice for Maine’s 5 Area Agencies on Aging on issues that promote independence, dignity and economic self-reliance for Maine’s 300,000+ seniors. Maine’s five Area Agencies on Aging are: Aroostook Area Agency on Aging in Presque Isle Eastern Area Agency on Aging in Bangor Spectrum Generations in Augusta SeniorsPlus in Lewiston Southern Maine Area Agency on Aging in Scarborough The Area Agencies on Aging, established under the Federal Older Americans Act in 1973, are private, non-profit agencies supported by grants and funds from the federal and state government, local municipalities and private contributions. Maine’s network of Agencies on Aging is the leading source of information for thousands of Maine seniors on aging, healthy living and benefits. Programs and outreach support services are designed to improve the physical, social and emotional well-being of older adults and to reduce the burden on families and caregivers. Put simply, the Area Agencies on Aging make a difference in the everyday lives of Maine’s older adults. They bring meals, provide family caregiver support, provide expert advice on insurance and drug benefits, and direct the needy to appropriate resources for food, fuel and financial assistance. Maybe most importantly, they provide a community for seniors – places for social interaction, learning and care.
