🌲 The Red Spruce is the most abundant tree by volume in Maine. Its strong wood fibers make it valuable for building lumber, pulp for paper making, and musical instruments, making it one of the most important species in the forest products industry. 🌲

Our thoughts are with those affected by the devastating events in Searsmont, including the first responders, the community, the employees, and the Robbins Family.

The effects of Friday's events stretch across the Forest Community. Businesses like Robbins Lumber Company are cornerstones of our communities. Their impact stretches across the state from the seedling to the finished product and every person in that process, from landowner to forester to logger to truck driver to the mill, to the consumer.

The Robbins Lumber Company Family has played an important role in our organization's history, as they've been with us since the very start. Every day we leave the office, we are reminded of their monumental contributions to our community.

The latest edition of our Scientific Communication series from Holt Research Forest is now available!

"Our S-l0 transects are l0m-wide strips that run the length of the "E" and "I" blocks (Fig. 1). On the S-10s, researchers have collected sapling and crown measurement data. Mapping and measuring tree heights and crowns on the S-10s allows us to better understand tree growth (...)"

Thank you to for hosting "Designing Maine's 2030 Framework: Innovation in Education, Workforce, and Technology" at L.L.Bean headquarters, where leaders of education, business, philanthropy, workforce development, and community organizations gathered for an important day focused on innovation, youth career readiness, and Maine’s educational and economic future.

As a Forest-based Education organization focused on advancing workforce development initiatives, this was a great opportunity to learn about innovation and workforce development needs across industries throughout the state. We appreciated the opportunity to be in the room with a broader network of industry representatives from manufacturing to healthcare. The challenges we face in our work are shared across our industries, and so are the solutions.

Key themes that stood out to us included centering student voices in the process, providing real-world work-based learning opportunities, and building systems rather than stand-alone programs.

And in a full-circle moment, our Executive Director, Logan, had the chance to catch up with his High School Career Readiness Teacher!

We look forward to remaining engaged in this work!
