The creature calendar feature for September is the "Ladybug". Ladybugs, or Coccinella septempunctata, are actually beetles, not true bugs. They use their bright colors to warn predators that they taste terrible, can eat up to 5,000 aphids in a lifetime, and can taste using their feet!

The Holt Research Forest Technicians have officially completed the latest 100% Complete Timber Inventory! This major feat was only possible thanks to the tireless efforts of several research technicians over the years who have dedicated their summers to collecting long-term ecological monitoring data with us.

100% Complete Timber Inventories are conducted by identifying, measuring, and recording the status of every single overstory tree within the study grid, which is just under 100 acres. 100% Complete Timber Inventories are typically completed once before and after planned harvests, and Partial Timber Inventories are completed every few years between harvests and complete inventories. With our unaggregated data, we can share a few snippets of information from this year’s summer data collection.

The top three overstory species our technician crew identified this summer, in order, are white pine, red oak, and red maple. Although the average diameter was only 28.1 cm, the largest tree they measured had a diameter of 135.2 cm!

Over the fall semester, we look forward to welcoming our Fall Data Management Intern, who will compile and summarize this and other datasets collected this past summer. Community members gathered to celebrate the culmination of the Maine TREE Foundation’s 2026 field season. The celebration highlighted the hard work, field discoveries, and independent projects completed by this year’s vibrant cohort of interns, research technicians, and fellows. Since June, these individuals have engaged in independent projects while managing their role responsibilities.

The Forestry Immersion Program, a six-week summer forestry experience for high school students, hosted a celebration as students welcomed family, friends, and supporters to see what they accomplished throughout the program. Guests witnessed the many skills students developed through hands-on learning as they led demonstrations on chainsaw safety, tree identification, whittling, and camp life. These activities reflect the growth and independence students build throughout the experience. The students even prepared a camp lunch for all their visitors, including a staple from Maine’s logging-camp days: bean-hole beans.
