Today, the Auburn Fire Department recognizes Firefighter Jeffrey Salvage as he completes his final overnight shift and begins his well-earned retirement after more than 22 years of service to the City of Auburn.
Jeff was hired on March 31, 2004, and during his career served in each of the department's fire companies, building friendships and earning the respect of firefighters across every platoon and station. Since May 26, 2012, he has proudly served with A Platoon Engine Company 3, where he has spent the majority of his career.
In addition to his work on emergency scenes, Jeff has always been committed to the health and wellness of his fellow firefighters. As a certified Peer Fitness Trainer, he played a key role in promoting physical fitness within the department and was instrumental in leading the fitness program for the Auburn Fire Department's 2014 Recruit Class.
While many know Jeff as a dedicated firefighter and coworker, others know him for his talents away from the station. In his free time, he enjoys playing guitar and performing with the local band, No Filter, bringing the same energy and passion to music that he brought to the fire service.
Over the last two decades, Jeff has answered countless calls for service, worked alongside several generations of firefighters, and made a lasting impact on the Auburn Fire Department. Whether on the fireground, in the gym, or around the station, he has always been someone his fellow firefighters could count on.
As Jeff signs off for the final time today, we thank him for his years of dedication, friendship, and service to the Auburn community.

The Auburn Firefighters Local 1446 would like to recognize the quick response, professionalism, and outstanding work of the firefighters involved in the recent residential fire incident. Due to the rapid actions of responding crews, the fire was quickly extinguished, helping to minimize damage to the residence and prevent further extension of the fire.

In addition to fire suppression efforts, firefighters worked compassionately alongside the family to safely remove pets from the residence and ensure their safety during this stressful incident.

This incident highlights the dedication, training, and teamwork demonstrated daily by the members of the Auburn Fire Department while serving and protecting the community. Local 1446 commends all personnel involved for their professionalism and commitment to the citizens they serve.

The Auburn Firefighters Local 1446 also reminds residents of the importance of working smoke detectors, practicing home fire escape plans, and ensuring pets are included in family emergency planning.

Today, we proudly recognize and honor Assistant Chief Ed Sherman as he retires following a distinguished career dedicated to the fire service and the protection of our community.

Throughout his years of service, Assistant Chief Sherman exemplified professionalism, integrity, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to those he served alongside and the citizens who depended on him. His contributions to the department extend far beyond emergency response serving as a mentor, leader, instructor, and trusted presence within the organization.

The fire service demands sacrifice, dedication, and selflessness, and Assistant Chief Sherman consistently answered that call with honor and pride. His experience, guidance, and steady leadership have helped shape the department and positively impacted countless firefighters throughout his career.

As he closes this chapter, we reflect with gratitude on the many years of service he has devoted to this profession and this community. While his presence within the department will certainly be missed, his legacy and contributions will not be forgotten.

On behalf of the entire department, we extend our sincere appreciation to Assistant Chief Ed Sherman for his years of faithful and dedicated service. We wish Ed and his family continued health, happiness, and success as he begins this well-deserved retirement.

Today, the Auburn Fire Department recognizes the retirement of Assistant Chief Ed Sherman as he completes his final shift after nearly 31 years of dedicated service to the City of Auburn and our community.

Assistant Chief Sherman was hired on July 31, 1995, beginning a career commitment to the fire service and the Auburn community. On September 18, 2000, he was promoted to Lieutenant of C Platoon Engine Company 4, where he quickly established himself as a respected leader and mentor.

One of the defining moments of his career came on March 17, 2003, during a structure fire on Easterly Avenue. Through courageous and decisive actions, then Lieutenant Sherman, along with three fellow firefighters and 2 ambulance personnel, were instrumental in rescuing an unconscious occupant from the fire. In recognition of those heroic actions, he was presented with the Fire Department Department Medal of Valor on October 3, 2003.

Throughout his career, Assistant Chief Sherman continued to rise through the ranks of the department:

• Promoted to Captain of B Platoon Engine Company 2 on August 13, 2006
• Re-Assigned to Rescue Company Captain on March 31, 2008
• Returned to Engine Company 2 Captain on July 22, 2008
• Transferred to Captain of Engine Company 3 on June 26, 2010
• Promoted to Assistant Chief on August 28, 2012

Over the course of nearly three decades, Assistant Chief Sherman has dedicated himself to protecting the citizens of Auburn, serving alongside generations of firefighters, and helping shape the future of the department through his leadership, experience, and unwavering dedication.

As he completes his final shift today, the members of the Auburn Fire Department thank Assistant Chief Ed Sherman for his years of service, sacrifice, and commitment to this department and community.

Due to the recent increase in E-bike accidents within the City of Auburn, the Auburn Firefighters Local 1446 would like to remind everyone to stay safe while riding. E-bikes can be a fun and efficient way to travel, but they also present serious dangers when operated carelessly or without proper safety precautions.

Riders are encouraged to learn about safe operation and the importance of respecting the rules of the road. Many recent accidents have involved excessive speed, unsafe riding practices, and failure to follow traffic laws.

Remember: E-bikes are not toys. Riders share the roadway with vehicles and pedestrians, and one poor decision can lead to serious injury or death.

Let’s work together to keep our community safe and prevent avoidable tragedies.

Today, the members of Auburn Firefighters Local 1446 pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Memorial Day is more than a long weekend, it is a day to reflect on the courage, dedication, and selflessness of those who gave their lives defending the freedoms we enjoy every day.

We also remember the military families who continue to carry the weight of that sacrifice. Their strength and resilience will never be forgotten.

As firefighters, we understand the meaning of service, commitment, and brotherhood, and today we stand united in honoring all of our fallen heroes.

At the time of this incident, Auburn Fire Department resources were already heavily committed to multiple emergency calls throughout the City. Engine 2 was operating on a priority medical emergency awaiting the arrival of a county ambulance, while Engine 4 and Car 1 were simultaneously dispatched to a vehicle versus pedestrian accident alongside an Onondaga County ambulance crew.

Despite these ongoing emergencies, Engine 3, Truck 1, and Rescue 1 responded immediately to the incident involving multiple patients exposed to an unknown substance, with Car 1 arriving shortly after clearing the pedestrian accident scene. While crews were actively operating at this incident, the Auburn Fire Department continued to answer additional emergency calls throughout the City with the assistance of Auburn City Ambulance, Cayuga County ambulances, and Onondaga County ambulances.

Due to the proper staffing levels maintained by the Auburn Fire Department, no emergency calls within the City went unanswered. This incident serves as another example of why adequate staffing is critical to providing effective emergency response services. Maintaining proper staffing allows Auburn Firefighters to simultaneously manage multiple complex emergencies while continuing to provide the high level of service and protection the citizens of Auburn expect and deserve.

On Friday, May 22, 2026, at approximately 6:10 PM, the Cayuga County 911 Center received reports of two individuals experiencing symptoms after being exposed to an unknown substance at the Auburn Correctional Facility, located at 135 State Street in Auburn.
Auburn NY City Ambulance and Throop Fire Department INC. Ambulance responded to the scene to provide patient care. Shortly after arriving and evaluating the patients, EMS personnel requested an upgraded response to include the Auburn Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team.
Truck Company, Rescue 1, Engine Company 3, and the Duty Chief responded to the facility and arrived within minutes. Upon arrival, fire crews were advised by EMS personnel and correctional staff that a total of five correction officers had potentially been exposed to the substance.
A hazardous materials entry team entered the facility and conducted testing on the suspected item, as well as multiple surrounding surfaces and locations for possible contamination. Preliminary field testing returned positive results for fentanyl in multiple areas.
Two correction officers were transported by ambulance to Auburn Community Hospital for further evaluation. Three additional officers were evaluated on scene by medical staff.
Crews remained on scene conducting investigation, mitigation, and decontamination operations before clearing the incident at approximately 7:32 PM.
The items involved were secured and handed over to the Department of Corrections, the incident remains under investigation by at this time.
The Auburn Fire Department would like to recognize the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies for their rapid response and professionalism during this incident.

The Auburn Firefighters recently responded to a significant incident involving multiple patients exposed to an unknown substance at a local facility. Upon arrival, Firefighters were faced with an evolving and uncertain situation with limited information regarding the substance involved and the overall hazards present.

Without hesitation, Auburn Firefighters immediately went into action, rapidly assessing the scene, rescuing victims, assisting with patient care, and working alongside EMS partners to ensure those affected received immediate medical attention. Incidents involving unknown substances are among the most challenging emergencies responders can face, requiring quick decision-making, professionalism, and a high level of specialized training.

This incident highlights the extensive capabilities and preparedness of Auburn Firefighters, who are trained to handle a wide range of emergencies throughout the City of Auburn and surrounding areas. In addition to traditional fire suppression and EMS response, Auburn Firefighters maintain proficiency in numerous special operations disciplines, including Hazardous Materials (HazMat) response, Confined Space Rescue, Trench Rescue, Building Collapse Rescue, Rope Rescue, Swift Water Rescue, Surface Water Rescue, and Ice Water Rescue.

To maintain these critical skills, Auburn Firefighters regularly train every other Saturday on specialized rescue disciplines and complex emergency operations. This ongoing commitment to training ensures that firefighters remain prepared to respond effectively and safely when the community needs them most.

The Auburn Firefighters Local 1446 would also like to recognize the teamwork and cooperation of all responding agencies involved in this incident. Their coordinated efforts helped ensure a rapid and effective response during a complex emergency situation.

The Auburn Fire Department, Auburn City Ambulance, and multiple mutual aid ambulances from Cayuga and Onondaga Counties are currently operating at 85 Thornton Avenue, Auburn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, for multiple patients reportedly exposed to an unknown substance. Emergency crews remain on scene evaluating patients, identifying the source of the exposure, and ensuring the safety of residents and staff.

The incident remains active and additional information will be released as it becomes available. Residents are asked to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to operate safely and efficiently.

Auburn Fire Department Quickly Brings Liberty Street Fire Under Control

Auburn, NY — May 18, 2026

At approximately 6:54 p.m. on May 18, 2026, the Auburn Fire Department was dispatched to 32 Liberty Street for a reported structure fire. Fire units arrived on scene in under three minutes and found smoke showing from the attic area of the residence.

Crew from Engine 2 immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack to locate and extinguish the fire. Truck Company personnel simultaneously laddered the building and performed vertical ventilation operations to remove heat and smoke, improving interior conditions for firefighters operating inside the structure.

Engine 3 was assigned to establish a water supply and assist Engine 2 with fire suppression efforts, while Engine 4 was assigned Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) duties to ensure firefighter safety on scene.

With all on-duty crews committed to fireground operations, Car 1 requested a second alarm to bring in off-duty personnel to maintain emergency coverage for additional calls within the City of Auburn.

Due to the coordinated efforts, rapid response, and professionalism of responding crews, the fire was brought under control within approximately 20 minutes.

This incident highlights the fast response capabilities, training, and dedication of the members of Auburn Firefighters Local 1446. Their commitment to professionalism and preparedness continues to provide the residents of Auburn with the high level of fire protection they deserve.
