Some stories change us forever. Katie’s is one of them.

Katie was the kind of person who made people feel seen — the friend who checked in, the sister who showed up, the woman whose kindness felt effortless. When she welcomed her baby boy into the world, she stepped into motherhood with the same quiet strength and fierce love she brought to everything in her life.

She had only eight days with her baby. Eight days of holding him, loving him, memorizing his face. Eight days that should have been the beginning of a lifetime.

But a severe complication in the days after childbirth ended her life far too soon.

Her loss shattered a family and a community — and it revealed something heartbreaking and urgent: too many mothers are still dying from complications we can prevent.

Shine Her Light was created to make sure no other family has to endure what hers did.

Every time we teach someone the warning signs…

Preeclampsia affects 3–8% of pregnancies worldwide and remains one of the leading causes of severe complications and maternal death .

It can appear suddenly — even after delivery — and early symptoms are often dismissed as “normal pregnancy discomfort.”

Shine Her Light exists because one mother’s story showed us how quickly preeclampsia can turn life-threatening. We share this to empower families with knowledge — because awareness is prevention.

On World Preeclampsia Day we remember Katie, and the light she brought into every room. Many of you know Katie’s story — a healthy 28‑year‑old who faced unexpected postpartum complications. Her loss taught us how fragile the postpartum period can be and inspired our foundation.
