Be sure to check out the Rotary Peace Park the next time you pass by City Hall. This installation is sponsored by The Rotary Cdlub of Auburn. It is still a work in progress, but tables, benches, a bike rack, and a watering station have already been installed. This promises to be a beautiful addition to the Lawn to Garden Project.

The Rotary Club of Auburn has donated this bench to Stand Up Placer, an organization dedicated to providing shelter and assistance to survivors of s*xual assault, domestic violence, and s*x trafficking in our community. The Club was awarded the bench by the Trex Corporation for having collected over 1000 pounds (close to 2400 pounds) of film plastic last year. The Club was also awarded a bench the previous year. That one was donated to the new pickle ball courts behind City Hall.

If you have passed by City Hall lately, you may have noticed some changes. The City Hall Garden Project is well underway. We have laid down cardboard over the entirety of the City Hall front yard as well as over half of the Police Department front yard. On Monday, June 1, we will finish with the cardboard for the Police Department.

Drip irrigation has been laid out on the right half of the City Hall lawn (see photo below). The left half will get drip tomorrow.

On Saturday, June 13, the Rotary Club of Auburn will be spreading 50 cubic yards of mulch over the cardboard to inhibit w**d growth. If you want to join the mulch party, please feel free to do so. We are going to need all the help we can get.

I am absolutely SURE that there are many of you who WANT to help us take plastic out of the waste stream in our fair town. I have come to the conclusion that I have made it too difficult for you to reach us. So, here is my email: [email protected]. Please join our cause.

I am absolutely thrilled to announce that we have located a site for a film plastic recycling center right here in Auburn. Our next challenge is to convince local merchants to let us pick up their pallet wrap and take it to the center. Our goal is to divert as much film plastic as possible away from the landfill and repurpose it to make deck boards. If you are a business owner willing to cooperate with us on this, please be sure to reach out to us.

We have a new concept.

Every day shipments come into the big stores in our community wrapped in film plastic. The vast majority of this film plastic goes straight to the landfill. The Western Placer Waste Management Authority, where all your trash goes, does not attempt to sort film plastic from all the rsst of the trash.

However, there is hope. The Trex company, which makes the Trex deck boards you are probably familiar with, has a boundless appetite for film plastic, which they directly repurpose to make their deck boards. They have launched an innovative program called NexTrex Grassroots to encourage communities like ours to establish film plastic recyclcing center. Trex will provide us with a baler and will pick up the baled plastic at regular intervals.

However, there are two key elements that are left for us to figure out. First, we need a closed structure to keep the plastic dry. The structure needs to be at least 1000 sq.ft., preferably somewhat larger. It should be fairly close to downtown. Second, we are going to need a forklift, as the bales are 700-1000 pounds.

Is there anyone out there with a structure you are willing to dedicate to a good cause? How about a forklift? If we can get these elements in place, we envision enlisting a platoon of local volunteers to visit the big stores on a weekly basis, pick up 4-5 plastic bags from each one, and deliver them to the Recycling Center.

This is an ambitious vision, but very much within the scope of a giving community like ours. If we can make this happen, we will be diverting up to a hundred tons of plastic from the landfill every year. Let's do this!

Sustain Auburn, together with The Rotary Club of Auburn, is announcing their Lawn to Garden initiative. The plan is to convert the lawns in front of City Hall and the Police Department building nextdoor to drought tolerant gardens that will improve soil health and water retention, sequester carbon, and foster pollinators. The intent is for these gardens to also provide a space for learning ecology, inviting residents and visitors to find inspiration to bring sustainable practices to their own homes. The gardens will connect old town and downtown by providing a rest stop between the districts and will serve as an inviting gateway to the downtown area. To this end, they will feature a bike fix-it station and patio seating shaded by an umbrella. The plan for both gardens is below. Planting is expected to begin this winter and be complete by spring of 2026. We will be looking for support, both financial and labor, from the community. We welcome comments and questions.

The information below is copied from the Rotary International ESRAG website. This is a great site for glenaing information about our environment and inspiration for what you can do about it,

Why Focus on Plastics?
Plastic production is booming, expected to triple by 2060 if we don’t intervene.
91% of plastic waste isn’t recycled—it ends up in landfills, incinerators, or the environment.
Plastics contribute to climate change, as they’re derived from fossil fuels and release emissions at every stage of their lifecycle.
Microplastics are now found in our bodies, oceans, air, and even the most remote corners of the Earth.
