It is an honor and pleasure to present the 2026 Director of the Year award, and add his name to the list of colleagues who continually bring excellence and dedication to our students in Northern California.
Leading a music department at a high school as the sole director of music is one of the toughest teaching jobs that is out there. Every class is different every hour. Every class has hours of prep work each week just to make those minutes special for each student. And as soon as those minutes pass, it's time to plan for the next. The depth of musical and educational knowledge has to be thorough and top-notch in order to deliver a quality of music educational experience for all. And in all honesty, this profession typically has teachers who specialize in either instrumental or vocal music, not both.
For the last twenty years, our director of the year continues to give tirelessly to his students and families in both instrumental and choral music at Placer High School in Auburn, CA. His ensembles have continually achieved success throughout festivals, competitions, and performances throughout California. His students appreciate his dedication to them, his tough love, and his sense of humor on the podium and in everyday life. They have learned so much about how to be wonderful musicians, and more importantly, good humans to each other under his direction. They've also learned that anything you do in life can be done while wearing Birkenstocks.
Prior to being at Placer, our director of the year taught in Washington at Yelm and Entiat High Schools. Nevertheless, Placer High has been the place where our director of the year found his home, and to be the hub of music for the Gold Country. 2026 marks the end of his tenure at Placer, and after thirty-nine years of teaching, he is about to embark on the adventure of retirement. He plans to sleep for six months (his words), go to Portugal, and walk through a whole new life each day, but definitely in Birkenstocks.
Our Director of the Year, from Placer High School, is David Lawrenson.
