Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, celebrated annually on June 19. It marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and ensure that the state's 250,000 enslaved Black people were finally freed. This was two years after the actual Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863).
Over the decades, it has evolved into a time for family reunions, educational events, festivals, and cookouts, frequently featuring traditional red-colored foods like barbecue, strawberry soda, and hibiscus tea.
The holiday represents more than just the end of slavery - it serves as a day to honor Black resilience, celebrate accomplishments, and reflect on the ongoing journey toward true equality and freedom for all.
