Leadership isn't always about leading. Sometimes it's about trusting someone else enough to follow.

In our latest episode of Leading Locally, Kristen sat down with Stewart Mills to discuss an unlikely leadership lesson that began with conflict, grew through trust, and ultimately led to an incredible journey of teamwork and personal growth through Adventure Racing.

One of our favorite takeaways from the conversation was this: leadership doesn't always mean taking charge. Sometimes the most important leadership decision we make is choosing to let someone else lead.

Yesterday, we celebrated the ribbon cutting of Project Mustard Seed, the Leadership Lee County Class of 2025-2026’s service project at the Community Market of East Alabama.

At its core, this project was about more than improving a physical space. It was about creating a welcoming environment where individuals and families can gather with dignity, connection, and a sense of belonging.

By transforming an underutilized outdoor area into a functional community space, Project Mustard Seed helps move the experience from one of necessity to one of community. The new space will provide opportunities for connection, education, accessibility, and growth for years to come.

This project is a reminder that leadership is not simply about identifying needs but it’s about coming together to create solutions that leave a lasting impact.

Thank you to the many sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community partners who made this vision possible. Your investment will continue serving Lee County long after today.

And to the Leadership Lee County Class of 2025-2026: thank you for choosing a project that reflects the heart of leadership.

When we picture a leader, we often think of executives, directors, and people with titles. But leadership has never been reserved for positions or job descriptions.

What about the retiree who shows up to volunteer every week?
What about the teacher who stays two hours after the bell because one of her students needed her?

The truth is, everyone leads in some capacity! Leadership is about impact, influence, and service.

We believe leadership belongs to anyone who wants to make a difference in their community. If you care about Lee County and want to grow as a leader within it, we’d love to stay connected.
