On February 2, 100+Women Who Care Androscoggin held their ninth fundraising meeting at Central Maine Community College in Auburn. At that meeting, the membership voted to support Community Cares Backpack Program with their donations. The checks, totaling $8050, were delivered to the Backpack Program on March 9. Because of this donation, the program is also eligible for up to a $1,000 matching grant from the Richard M Schulze Foundation.
The mission of the Community Cares Backpack Program is to provide children who are suffering the effects of chronic hunger with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to eat when school meals are not available for students prek to fourth grade in RSU4 (Sabattus, Litchfield and Wales). The program is designed to ensure all students maintain a balanced diet and return to school every Monday morning ready to focus on learning.
Started by a concerned mom, the Backpack Program is run entirely by volunteers and provides food to 75 students each week during the school year. Local businesses have contributed to the effort to increase the amount and types of food that can be provided.
100+ Women Who Care Androscoggin is a collaboration of local women who invest in the community by pooling their donations for the greatest impact. They meet four times a year. Members can nominate organizations or projects that are working to address community needs. At each meeting they hear from 3 of the nominated organizations and then vote for one group to receive their donation. The members then write a check to that organization. To date, 100+ Women Who Care Androscoggin has raised and donated $60,510. With the matching grant, the community impact is $79,915.
