I recently came across this video. Sure, it has a random guy doing a heroic thing at a bus stop for a woman that was not paying attention to her surroundings, but this “hero” was not paying attention either. As a person who teaches situational awareness and being aware of your surroundings, this is my take on this situation (time code notations follow):
At 0:20 – the woman (victim) does not acknowledge anyone is even close to her
At 0:43 – the woman does not feel anyone touching her or her belongings
At 0:56 – again, the woman does not feel anyone touching her or her belongings
At 1:41 – the “hero” is looking in the same direction as the thief and the victim and notices absolutely nothing
At 2:23 – the “hero” finally pays enough attention to his surroundings to see what is going on before eventually confronting the thief
Nearly 2 ½ minutes pass before the hero notices what is going on! Honestly, that is not being aware.
Even on a cell phone the hero (and the victim) should be looking up/forward and regularly scanning their surroundings. This robber should never have the chance to get close enough to steal one much less three items on four separate attempts.
This robber should have been deterred and caught sooner. Always be aware of your environment people and choose the best locations to sit/stand that minimize your chances of being taken by surprise and/or victimized.
