This little orange critter is called a Mexican Bean Beetle. Despite being a species of ladybeetle (or ladybug), they are extremely destructive crop pests. Most ladybugs are beneficial insects in the garden since they eat other insects (like aphids!). These bean beetles, on the other hand, eat beans, peas, and other legumes! By mid to late summer, you'll likely find an infestation of these in your green bean patch. You can spray insecticides to control these guys but we employ the simplest method: a squishing spree every few days! Yuk!
