The Kevin Bell and Colonel Andrew W LaMar Jr Shoot for Veterans is a fundraising event held annually in memory of Kevin Bell and Colonel Andrew W LaMar Jr to raise money for the Auburn Veterans Committee. As the disease progressed, Kevin could do less and less for himself physically while his mother, Debbie Allen, fought tirelessly to keep his days full of hope and opportunity. Despite being confi
ned to a wheelchair and unable to record his own class notes, Kevin graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Psychology at age 19 and went on to obtain a degree in Spanish two years later. Kevin loved Auburn University! During his campus years, Kevin became well known riding his scooter to class accompanied by Shelby, his black Labrador Retriever, who was his constant companion and trained assistance dog. Despite severe physical limitations, Kevin remained unusually upbeat and while he was able, enjoyed the challenges of substituting as a teacher with Auburn City Schools. His life is a true inspiration, not only to those who knew him but to many others who were uplifted by what he achieved against all odds. His accomplishments stand as a testament to the unfailing love of his mother, Debbie, and sister, Allison Bell, as well as Kevin’s own dogged determination to succeed. On the morning of April 17th, 2010, at age 29, Kevin succumbed to Friedreich’s Ataxia, after having excelled in spite of it for so many years. In 2008, the City of Auburn and the Auburn Veterans Committee established the Auburn Veterans Scholarship Foundation in an effort to show the Auburn community’s appreciation for the sacrifices made by our service men and women and their families. The goal is to provide annual scholarships to assist local veterans and dependents in attending a local, post-secondary educational institution. The Kevin Bell Memorial Shoot is honored to serve in this effort with able assistance from veterans and AU ROTC students! The 2015 event was our best year yet and allowed us to donate $11,500 to the Auburn Veterans Committee at the City of Auburn’s Veteran’s Day celebration. We hope to continue to assist this great cause for many years to come, and we appreciate your support!
