ReTreeUS Our mission is to promote an environmentally sustainable, socially just food system by providing education, practical resources and mentorship.

We are a project under the United Charitable Programs. ReTreeUS is a nonprofit organization (501c3 under the United Charitable Programs) dedicated to promoting an environmentally sustainable, socially just food system. We plant orchards with local schools and provide educational programs that empower young people and their families to grow their own home gardens. We connect households of all incom

e levels with the resources they need to grow and buy local, organic produce, making nutrition accessible to those for whom good food is otherwise out of reach. As educators head back to school, we're thinking about all the care and creativity that goes into creating meaningful learning experiences for students.

We created our School Orchard Lesson Guide as one more resource to support that work and help school orchards continue to grow as evergreen outdoor classrooms throughout the year. 🌳

The free guide includes 10 hands-on, standards-aligned lessons covering topics like pollinators, healthy soils, tree biology, and orchard care, along with student resources and companion slides.

ReTreeUS is proud to be part of the ADAPT project, a regional collaboration with researchers and educators from the University of New Hampshire Extension, Dartmouth, and Yale focused on expanding the use of agroforestry systems across New England.

Together, we are working toward an ambitious goal: establishing 30 educational food forests at schools and community organizations by the end of 2028.

You might be wondering, what is a food forest?

Think of it as a garden designed to work more like a natural forest. Instead of planting crops in separate rows, food forests bring together many different types of plants, including fruit trees, berry shrubs, herbs, and other edible plants, creating a diverse ecosystem where plants support one another.

Through this partnership, ReTreeUS will help schools create outdoor spaces where students can explore ecology, food systems, and stewardship while connecting more deeply with the natural world.

A school orchard has the potential to be so much more than a place where trees are planted.

It's a place where students can discover where food comes from, observe pollinators at work, explore science, and build a connection with the natural world.

Happy Arbor Day! The fruit trees for this year’s plantings have been potted up and will be cared for in our nursery through the spring and summer until they’re planted in school orchards this fall.
