Congress is trying to back veterans into a corner and take away benefits they already earned through service. Veterans’ benefits are not handouts and they’re not there to balance the budget. Tell Congress to back off Veterans earned benefits and Honor the Contract. Take action

Today is National Women Veterans Recognition Day.

As explained by the VA, this is not a Veterans Day just for women, but a celebration of the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act in 1948, which was significant in that is allowed women the right to permanently and fully serve in the regular armed forces (and to be recognized as veterans after doing so).

Prior to the signing of this act, military women (save for nurses) were sent home after each conflict. Many were not treated as veterans who served their nation, but like civilians. They were often denied the rights and benefits afforded to men who'd served beside them, simply because of their gender. The act "deemed women essential to war efforts and allowed them to serve in the regular armed forces full time," (Missina Schallus, VA news).

Women have served in conflicts and wars throughout America's history, including the Civil War and the Revolutionary War, in positions as nurses and support staff (and even as spies!).

The VA notes, "Currently, Women Veterans Recognition Day is a state-recognized commemoration. This year, the states of Alaska, California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah... and Wisconsin will recognize" it, as will the Virgin Islands.

With that in mind, today and every day we salute women veterans, regardless of when, where, how or how long they served, or whether they reside in a state that recognizes the holiday. Thank you all.

We will be at the Lee County Fairgrounds Al on Friday June 12 to continue work on the EXPO Barn. The new renovations are coming along well and we look forward to everyone being able to enjoy the new look this year! Hopefully we can give the Barn many more years of service to our community! Thank you to all of the volunteers who have and are still helping with this project!

Open House Coffee on Wednesday from 0800-1100! We will also be getting volunteers together to pick up flags around the cemeteries that were placed during Memorial Day. We hope to see you there!

Monthly Meeting on Monday June 1st at the Post from 1800-2000! This starts the new term for the year as we welcome new officers and review current and upcoming events! We hope to see everyone this upcoming Monday!

On this Memorial Day Weekend we Honor our fallen brothers and sisters. You may see Buddy Poppies being worn by veterans during this time and there is a specific reason for that. This is the poem of Flanders Field by a Canadian Officer who witnessed the casualties during WWI. We now wear the Poppies to remember all who have come before us, with us to the battlefield, those who came after we left the battlefield, and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
