At our annual awards ceremony held earlier this month, we were pleased to award $1,500 scholarships to four outstanding graduating seniors from local high schools. They were selected by their respective schools for their academic achievements, community involvement, and leadership potential. From left are Ahmed Ali, Edward Little High School; Ella Leo, Lewiston High School; Ryan Kelly, Poland Regional High School; Dalila Dube, Leavitt Area High School; and Stephanie Gelinas, chair of the Rotary Club’s scholarship committee.

The Club also awarded community grants of $1,800 to five local nonprofits for the valuable work they do in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Representing the grantees from left in the photo are Celeste Philippon, L-A Community Little Theatre; Linda Scott, Tonya Sands, and Kevin Boilard, Alter L/A Transitional Shelter; Gary Violette, Boys and Girls Clubs Auburn/Lewiston Clubhouse; Nicole Leavitt, Lewiston & Auburn Libraries BookReach Program; and Terry Capuano and Sandy Thompson, St. Martin de Porres Residence.

The ceremony was dedicated to long-time Rotarian Mac McPeake, who passed away in December. Known affectionately as Mr. Mac to countless youngsters, he was a founding volunteer for the local BookReach literacy program.

Our “Shred for a Cause” fundraiser held on Saturday, May 16 was a rousing success! We had a great time under sunny skies as we raised a record amount for a shredding event. And of course, all proceeds support Rotary community charities. We are very grateful for the support of the The Fortin & Pinette Group, who generously sponsored this event. Well done and thank you, one and all!

At our annual awards banquet held on May 7th at the Green Ladle, the club was honored to present Dr. Paul G. Caron, the director, music director, and composer of the musical production “A New Home,” with the Paul Harris Fellow Award. Dr. Caron is pictured here with his wife Susan.

Named after Paul Harris, who founded Rotary in 1905, this award is the highest form of recognition a Rotary Club can bestow. It is presented to club or community members who have made outstanding contributions to their community and thus have advanced the ideals and causes of Rotary.

Performed before large audiences last fall at the Lewiston Middle School Auditorium, “A New Home” tells, through music and dance, the rich and complex history of this city, bringing to life the stories of Lewiston’s Indigenous, Irish, Franco-American, and African immigrant communities, whose contributions have shaped the city’s identity and culture.

The club also awarded scholarships to four area high school seniors and grants to five local non-profit agencies.
