Across the state, Maine's credit unions are dedicated to supporting their neighbors and communities in ways that go far beyond financial services. Through the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger, they collectively focus on food insecurity, and last year alone, Maine credit unions raised nearly $1.5million for 298 organizations, including Good Shepherd Food Bank, food pantries, meal sites, and schools. Good Shepherd Food Bank is grateful for the impactful partnership of Maine's credit unions and their commitment to greater food security.

“Maine credit unions always step up when our neighbors need help,” said Elise Baldacci, President of the Maine Credit Union League. “Demand for food assistance continues to grow and every donation our Campaign receives this month will help put food on the table for more people in need.”

September Volunteer Highlight!

This month, we’re celebrating the incredible students and educators who make a difference in our community through volunteering at Good Shepherd Food Bank!

For students, volunteering is about more than giving back. It’s an opportunity to build confidence, learn valuable job skills, take on responsibility, and see the impact of their work firsthand.

Here’s an inside look at the student and educator teams who volunteer their time at the Food Bank:

Hampden Academy Life Skills Team
Since October 2021, this team has contributed an incredible 530 hours of service!

Hermon High School Team
Since January 2022, students have contributed 275 hours of service while developing both hard and soft skills.

Lewiston High School Life Skills Team
Since September 2025, this team has already contributed 91 hours of service!

That’s 896 hours of service and countless lessons, connections, and contributions to our community.

We are incredibly grateful to these students and educators for showing up, working hard, and helping make a difference. Thank you for supporting our mission!

Good Shepherd Food Bank is grateful for the dedicated support of longtime partner, Oakhurst Dairy . As a farmer-owned dairy based in Portland that sources milk from Maine, Oakhurst's commitment to the wellbeing of Maine children and families runs deep.

Across Maine, more than 50,000 children, or one of every five kids, is food insecure and Maine continues to have the highest rate of food insecurity in New England.

Alongside us in this work, our friends at Oakhurst recognize how difficult it is to learn, grow, and thrive without consistent, healthy food. Children are back at school and here at Good Shepherd Food Bank, we are grateful they have access to nutritious local milk, both in the cafeteria and at home.

We are proud to recognize Oakhurst as a Visionary Partner of Corporate Partners for a Hunger-Free Maine and appreciate the generosity they extend through financial support, dairy product donations, and strategic thought partnership.

Right now in Maine 8,500 babies live in families that can't afford diapers. And diapers are something that babies simply cannot go without. On behalf of 8,500 babies and their parents, SHARE THIS.

90,850 Maine households rely on SNAP for food and those benefits cannot be used to purchase any non-food items. The same families who need help reliably accessing food also need help accessing diapers, basic cleaning supplies and hygiene products.

So we’re starting Maine Needs Diapers for Every Baby - a fundraising effort to help ensure families don’t have to ration or go without.

WHAT WE'RE DOING

Fundraising to buy diapers in bulk, allowing us to access them at $0.17 a piece. This means we can provide 175 diapers (a month's supply) and wipes for $33 per baby.

Our fundraising goal is big because the need is big. And we believe that if all of us give what we can, when we can, we can meet the need and then some.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We need 8,500 to sign up to give $33/month - enough to supply diapers and wipes to a baby for an entire year. If a monthly donation doesn't work for you, please contribute whatever you can to help us reach as many babies as possible.

Join us this week as we recognize and celebrate the incredible drivers at Good Shepherd Food Bank for National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, September 13–19!

Every day, we celebrate the miles driven by our incredible drivers and the important role they play in making our mission possible. Traveling across Maine in all kinds of weather, they help ensure nutritious food gets from the Food Bank to our partners and, ultimately, to the Mainers and families who need it most.

From Kittery to Fort Kent and everywhere in between, every mile matters. Your dedication, hard work, and commitment make a difference in communities across our state.
