Seeking Instructors | Reading Unseen America
The Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project (APAEP) is seeking instructors to lead a NEA Big Read literature and discussion initiative inside Alabama correctional facilities.
This discussion-based series will explore themes of:
rural American identity
labor and economic hardship
generational trauma and endurance
community and belonging
perceptions of Appalachia and place
historically overlooked voices in American literature
Featured texts include:
Demon Copperhead
The Grapes of Wrath
Burning Bright
We are seeking instructors who value:
discussion-based, student-facing learning
community-centered education
structured and collaborative classroom environments
critical engagement through literature and dialogue
Courses will take place within The ADOC across Alabama during Fall 2026 and Spring 2027.
