Seeking Instructors | Reading Unseen America

The Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project (APAEP) is seeking instructors to lead a NEA Big Read literature and discussion initiative inside Alabama correctional facilities.

This discussion-based series will explore themes of:

rural American identity
labor and economic hardship
generational trauma and endurance
community and belonging
perceptions of Appalachia and place
historically overlooked voices in American literature

Featured texts include:

Demon Copperhead
The Grapes of Wrath
Burning Bright

We are seeking instructors who value:

discussion-based, student-facing learning
community-centered education
structured and collaborative classroom environments
critical engagement through literature and dialogue
Courses will take place within The ADOC across Alabama during Fall 2026 and Spring 2027.

This initiative is made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program and Arts Midwest.

APAEP is working to strengthen the Re-Entry Resource Guide by identifying services and community-based supports across Alabama — particularly in rural areas.
We invite organizations, agencies, community ministry support, and community leaders to complete a short survey to help map available resources and identify service gaps.
Participation is voluntary, and contact information is optional.

APAEP is happy to take paperback books that need a new home for our library development work inside. We really need contemporary fiction. These books get read 100s of times inside. Please email [email protected] for drop off coordination.

We do not need old textbooks, please. We also do not take in religious materials or true crime.

Auburn area friends, we have a part-time TES associate coordinator position open for our Community Education programming inside. This position is heavy on admin, but does involve visits to facilities where we are offering classes. It is an Auburn University-based position.
