Around the holidays we love spending time with our families and friends. During these times we love to share stories about members who may not be able to be with us. Here is a reminder of what the Belinda Sue Fund is all about; The Belinda Sue Fund for Ovarian Cancer Awareness & Research, Inc. was founded on November 1, 2011. The purpose of the Fund is to increase public awareness of Ovarian Cancer and to support organizations in advancing their research in the identification of an effective Ovarian Cancer screening tool. We do this in the name of Belinda Sue Nantais.

Belinda Sue Nantais, or Bindy as she was known to us all, fought valiantly for just over four years against Ovarian Cancer. She was diagnosed in July 2007 in Stage IIIc of the disease which eventually metastasized to her lung. After a long hard battle, she died on August 22, 2011 at age 52.

While we miss hearing Bindy's heartfelt laugh and seeing her beautiful smile, her spirit will be ever present in our hearts. It is because of her powerful spirit and her love for life, that this charity was created. Her greatest desire was that at least one life be saved through promoting awareness of this dreaded disease, which is the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers, and developing better screening tools in order to detect Ovarian Cancer in its early stages. It is her family and friends’ desire to fulfill Bindy’s wishes and save as many lives as possible.

About 1.2% of women in the general population will develop ovarian cancer in their lifetime. By contrast, 39%–44% of women who inherit a harmful BRCA1 variant and 11%–17% of women who inherit a harmful BRCA2 variant will develop ovarian cancer by 70–80 years of age.

Every women has BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, but only some women have mutations in those genes. Roughly 1 in every 500 women in the United States has a mutation in either her BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. If either your mother or your father has a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation, you have a 50% chance of having the same gene mutation.

Testing for inherited BRCA1 and BRCA2 variants may be done using a blood sample or a saliva sample. That is because blood cells and cells that are present in saliva, like every cell in the body, contain the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.
