Bailee and I were back again this year in Stillwater for the MAJ Scott Hagerty Memorial Ruck Stillwater, Oklahoma.
A 4-lane segment of Highway US 177, between the towns of Perkins and Stillwater, Oklahoma, was designated a Memorial Highway in 2011, in honor of Major Scott Allan Hagerty, a member of the United States Army Reserves who fell in the line of duty June 3rd 2008 when the vehicle they were patrolling in was hit by a roadside bomb in the vicinity of Zormat, the Paktia Providence of Eastern Afghanistan. There is about an 8 mile stretch on US-177 marked in memory of MAJ Hagerty. We start at the southern marker and walk to the cemetery, pay our respects and then finish the ruck at the northern marker.
Maj Hagerty’s family is present; it means so much to them that he is remembered and honored. I always leave a flag at the grave marker, and bring a dozen more for others to carry. Members of Operation Enduring Warrior, Oscar Mike Foundation, and EAGLE OPS as well as the Oklahoma State University Army Cadets turned out in force. It’s always emotional, but a fulfilling weekend of camaraderie and fellowship. I enjoy seeing friends, building stronger relationships and making new friends.
Bailee enjoys the ruck, and all the loving she gets. Bailee is the perfect ambassador, for her breed, for rescue and for service. Everyone loved on her, and she on them. And of course she loves a good road trip with momma.
I was very surprised proud of Bailee on the ruck; I gave her a full bowl of her electrolytes with breakfast , but honestly we didn’t fet to practice the full 8+ miles. I brought her new cart just in case. Someone driving behind us offered to put it in their car so I didn’t have to pull it the whole way; they would be ready if I signaled that we needed it. Bailee did amazing, she made it all 4+ miles to the cemetery, rested during the speeches and not only finished the ruck but walked the rest of the way to our car parked down and across ghe street .
Always an honor to participate.
