Happy Loon Fact Friday!
Loons bathe with dramatic splashes and dives to clean their feathers! These sessions can last up to 30 minutes and may look intense, but don’t worry, it’s all part of staying sleek and healthy! Bathing is different from preening, which happens after, when they carefully align and oil their feathers.

Few details are available at this time. There is an active fire containment situation on Nancy Ryan mountain northeast of Fern Lake. There is currently no danger to Fern Lake properties at this time.

Happy Loon Fact Friday!
Ever seen a loon stick one foot out of the water and give a little waggle? It might be their way of cooling off on hot summer days!
And when they rise up and flap those powerful wings? That’s a bold territorial display letting others know this lake is taken!

Please educate your family, friends, and renters. Sadly, two loons have died on Fern Lake this year. One due to toxic levels of lead from fishing tackle and the other from fishing line.

Each year, lead poisoning causes the deaths of loons, eagles, herons and other species that prey on fish when they accidentally swallow lead fishing tackle.

Happy Loon Fact Friday!
Loons aren’t built for land life so they catch their Z’s right on the water! These expert divers take short 15-minute naps. During nesting season, they may even snooze while incubating eggs. True multitaskers of the the waterway ecosystems!

Loon in the sunset glow over Fern Lake - nothing beats these peaceful moments where the water, the sky, and even the wildlife are touched by its summer magic.

Happy Loon Fact Friday!
Loons aren’t just graceful swimmers, they’re strategic too! During a “circle dance,” rival loons slowly swim around each other, sizing up the competition in a territorial showdown. While usually peaceful, these tense face offs can escalate into physical fights. Nature’s version of a standoff!
